I'm asking this in general instead of just on my writing filter or my writing journal since I feel like it can apply to both fanfic writers and original fic writers.

Have you ever started to write only to get stuck, afraid that what you're writing is empty and the most unoriginal thing ever? I bet most of you have. It could be a piece of fanfic that you're afraid is littered with the same old fandom/fanon cliches or some original project you fear is just Buffy the Vampire Slayer all over again.

What do you do? How do you fight that self-damning urge?

Some thoughts on originality and what we make it )

ETA: Um, did that come off as whiny? It wasn't meant to be. This is sort of part discussion and part rant. I think I failed in what I set out to do whih was just to set up place for people to talk about what works for them, if they feel the same, and to find some solace. Hmm.
moonshayde: (Yoda)
Ugh, so I have two files open: one is original fic and the other fanfic. Normally, if I am stuck in one, I can jump to the other. Can I do that today? Nope.

Whatever possessed me to think I could write monster fic with John Winchester and the boys hunting is beyond me. I can't write John!

And original fic, I have the ideas and scenes, but you refuse to be expressed in words. I think I hate you.

Maybe I should try by hand and take out the trusty old notebook.
moonshayde: (Write)
Okay, I give. I can't find this information.

Does anyone out there know the grammatically correct way to say "Holy Spirit" in Latin? Like Church Latin? I've seen it a half a dozen different ways on the net and I want the right one. It's for a story I'm trying to finish. I'd like to make the deadline. (It's original fic.) It's just really important for me to know how to say it properly.

It's just "Holy Spirit." Not in a sentence. Nothing. Just by itself.

Help?

Well, for the umpteenth time, I am trying to get back on track healthwise. I've been failing Weight Watchers all month, even though I used to do fabulous on it. I'm just lacking in motivation. But I read this article the other day that has me pumped again, so here I go! You may see posts of me babbling about weight and exercise and food, so you've been warned.

Now for fun. I snagged that writer meme everyone seems to be doing. My answers apply to both fanfic and my original stuff. Apologies if you see a double post - this is going up on my original fic journal as well.

My Spin on Writing )

So there you have it. That is me :)
moonshayde: (Write)
Okay flist. For all of you who write and who are around today, I challenge you to write 500-1000 words today. Do more if you can. I don't care what it is. It could be original fic or it could be fanfic. If it's fanfic, pick a show/fandom. Anything. I don't care what it is. Just write.

Post your Word Count to your journal when you're done and we'll congratulate you.

Then, if you can, meet me online tonight and we can talk about it. Feel free to email me. IM me. (I'm on a few different programs.) Comment here. Whatever works for you.

Good Luck :)

ETA: If there are enough people, we can have a tenative chat, like a precursor to the chats I have planned for next year. Since this is a spontaneous event, I don't have any kind of format set and it's open to fanfic and original fic. I think most people are on AIM so we'll probably end up there tonight, but for the January related events, we'll come up with something that may be more inclusive (either an independent chatroom or IRC or something else.)

So if you can, pop online 9pm est. If not or you're shy, you can still comment stuff here or message me personally. We just want to all share in the writing fun :)

ETA2: Spiletta also has a chat - http://www.spiletta.com/chat.html

Satisified

moonshayde: (SG1)
I have decided that I am satisfied. I am not going to talk about the finale anymore (for now). I said what I had to say, some of in jest and some of it seriously, but in the end I enjoyed the episode.

SG-1 is over and I enjoyed the ride :) Now, time for movies *grins*

In the meantime, I have a lot on my plate. I have tons of WIPs to finish and two insane ficathons I signed up for. Not panicking. Nope.

I also plan on letting the series sit for a while before I do a complete rewatch. It's all still too fresh for me right now and I want to really enjoy it when I do. I'm very happy many of you will be staying around to chat with me in fandom.

Outside of fandom, I have my novel and some short stories I'm working on. I'm trying to get over self imposed writer's block and self doubt, but it's tough. I need to stop thinking so much and get to work. I still feel good about the ideas. It's just RL is tough and I need to learn time management.

And I'm going to be more dedicated in planning time for me, even if it ticks other people off. Because I need to come first sometimes :)
moonshayde: (Unprotected)
So, I am bored and avoiding my short story manuscript that I think sucks and is awful and why do I try and I'm not going to submit it and I shouldn't kid myself and I should become a janitor...

Anyway, I was thinking about SG-1 and fandom. As most of you know, I am a die-hard team fan. I'm happiest with team. Yay team! But I do have a Daniel-slant. I like when stories favor Daniel. I like archeaology and anthropology and history, writing, and mythology. This has nothing to do with the fact I have degrees in archeaology and anthropology that focused on mythology, writing, and history ;)

It's only natural. I get Daniel because he has the same interests as I do. I'm more like Sam, and I get Sam because I'm also a science buff. I gravitate to fandom stories that have a Daniel-slant or a Daniel and Sam slant. I also strongly strongly favor fiction with a Daniel and Jack slant. Go Jack and Daniel friendship! Team is always central. It trumps everything. It's very much like what I enjoy from the show. However, I am nothing like Jack or Teal'c. At all.

Which naturally means Jack and Teal'c are my fave characters to write. It makes no sense.

It's true. When it comes to writing, I am a Jack nut. I love to write Jack. I also love to write Teal'c. You will often see me ranting and raving over Jack this and Jack that. Total Jack fangirl when it comes to writing.

Total Daniel fangirl when it comes to reading. (But goodness, the fic burns!)

Total team fan overall. I get testy if I see Sam or Teal'c get wallpapered in a fic without good reason

So hmm. It just amuses me.

On that note, I'll do that five favorite episodes for the characters thingy that is on LJ. Mind you, my thoughts change on a daily basis so these aren't set in stone.

Five Favorite Jack Episodes )

Five Favorite Daniel Episodes )

Five Favorite Sam Episodes )

Five Favorite Teal'c Episodes )

Five Favorite Jonas Episodes )

Five Favorite Mitchell Episodes )

Five Favorite Vala Episodes )

Woohoo!

Hmmm...mud mask. I went girly and gave myself a lavender mud mask this morning. Now I'm sleepy. But I smell pretty. Not that I am going to do anything today but be fannish and write, but hey, I smell pretty! Lavender is one of the few flowery smells that doesn't send me into a fit of sniffles and sneezes.

Fannish Things To Do

*I am going to organize and cut more icons, I think. I noticed a recent lack of Daniel in my icons and that is very bad. Need Daniel back. But I want to even it out so I have plenty of Daniel, Jack, Sam and Teal'c. I also am in need of Cam. And some pairing icons that I can smile over whether I feel fandom shippy or my regular old gen friendshippy self. Then, I'll look at my other non-SG1 icons and organize those too. I really need to make an icon that captures just me.

*Maybe write. Don't know what. Maybe a little short fic. Maybe work on one of my longer fics. Don't know!!! *indecisive*

*Watch an episode of SG-1. Next is...Memento. Hmm. It better be good.

*Watch an episode of something else. Let's see...Mac, Farscape, or Smallville. Haven't decided yet.

Original Writing

Not that I think many people care on this point, which is fine, and this is more for my sake than anything else. While I have gotten absolutely nowhere with my short story I've been angsting over, I've made leaps and bounds with my novel. I'm jotting down backstory notes like crazy. Since I'm planning this as a trilogy -- ideally, anyway -- I want all the backstory straight so that the books flow well. No retcon or sloppiness. Again, ideally anyway. So I am very very pleased that it's clicking like you wouldn't believe. Also, the character profiles and backgrounds are just fitting so perfectly. Everyone has their big faults now and it works in the context of the greater story. Maybe I am so hung up on the short story because my subconscious is so focused on novel right now. And I'm much better at writing long stories than short ones. I'm so excited! This is always my fave part of the creative process.

Music always helps me write. I don't do the whole song!fic thing, but the power in music helps me set the mood. So, for my novels, they are set to music by Keane and Muse. *happy sigh*

So, my day will be a good one. I'll probably be on and off all day, so if anyone's bored give me a shout out and I'll pop on to chat.

Oh man. My asthma kicked in after being dormant for quite some time so I had to take my inhaler. (Good thing I had a new one ordered as a backup.) And goodness...my body is so not used to it. I'm jumpy and jittery and shaky. Usually, that only happens when I have had to have breathing treatments in the past, not with the inhaler.

I feel like I am going to jump out of my skin *creeps*

On the bright side, my latest SG-1 fanfic is in betaland/editting (thanks!) and an even greater accomplishment is that my very first horror short story has emerged from its final edit in tact :) Well, from my final edit. If it does get accepted, then I may have to toy with it again. But I'm proud of it. I still don't think it has a good shot of getting accepted since I'm not very good with short stories, but I keep trying anyway. Never thought I'd write a horror fic, though. So that's been submitted and now I just have to wait and see.

But no time to just sit back over finishing. Off to the next short story and the fanfic I use to escape in between :)

ETA: Yay, the betaing is done! I'll be posting the fic shortly. But right now, I am going to watch some Farscape. I may finish off S3. I just finished I Yensch, You Yensch and I'm about to start Into the Lion's Den: Lambs to the Slaughter. I'll post my thoughts later.

ETA 2: OMG! I love Harvey!
moonshayde: (Default)
So, I didn't go to work tonight. I got there, they heard me, and sent me home.

Not complaining...

I did go ahead and watch some SG-1 tonight though. I've always liked The Fifth Man. And then I watched New Order. I love New Order. Daniel still annoys me in some scenes (as much as it pains me to say so) as does Jack (again it pains me to say so). But Sam and Teal'c were made of awesome.

And I think I am one of the few people that liked Fifth. And Weir was good in these eps.

Ah well. I had to relinquish the TV so I won't be watching Lockdown. It's okay. I've watched enough TV. I should go back to working on original fic. I'm letting the short story I wrote sit for a few days before I go back and edit it, but a writer's job is never done. I need to finish more.

*wishes she was watching The Shroud but is being good and waiting for April*

Again, you're all great with the no spoilers and the cuts :)

Pick a Fic

moonshayde: (Default)
I'm very indecisive. I can never settle on one thing. I have tons of fanfic to finish for SG-1, short and long, so I'll leave it open to you. For my longer fics, which fic do you think I should finish first?

[Poll #908850]

There's no guarentee I'll write the one that gets the most hits. I've done this before and I wrote the one that didn't really grab anyone. That turned into A Priori. But, hey. You never know. Anything to nudge me in the right direction. I'll work on the short fics in between. And they are all team fics.

Now, back to the original short story I'm working on. Yay for writing :)
