Fandoms

moonshayde: (Walk Together)
I was scrolling through some old posts on my various fandoms.

I miss it :(

Man, was I into fandom or what? Art, fic, discussion, and pure squee. Even then, I wasn't as obsessed and post-happy as others. Do I even do any of that now? I'm so crazy busy.

But man. The Smallville days. Mocking the cwazies. Squeeing over my favorite superhero pairing. Looking to see if each new episode would bring us closer to Superman or make me angry. I learned that there are so many other awesome people out there that love Superman and its mythos like I do.

Then there was SG-1. SO. MUCH. FIC. SG-1 was the fandom where I learned so much. This is where I made my first icons, banners, and wallpaper. I really tested and experimented in my writing and showed it to the world for the first time. I met a lot of fantastic people, and I learned a lot of hard lessons.

And last but not least, Supernatural. Still my fave show. Still excited and squeeful, even if I don't share it very often. (Even to [livejournal.com profile] meg_tdj.) While the overall strength and quality of the show is not what it used to be, particularly in the overarching story arcs, antagonists, and consistency, it's still stronger than I'd expect at its age with top-notch acting and interesting hooks. I'm proud to still call it my fave show. I wish some of my other fave shows had been this strong and enjoyable when they were in Season 8. I've never been as active in fandom, though, likely due to my past experiences in prior fandoms and because I'm in a different place in my life. Still, I miss the squee and the chat and the fun of being immersed in fandom just the same.

I think sometimes about my other interests, too. How I would love to get more invested in Dark Angel as the fandom is more fun than the show itself. I miss X-Files something fierce, and I think back how it used to be my fave TV show ever, until SPN came along. How fun it was to play with Lost theories and pray my fave characters wouldn't die. Then, of course, Star Wars, which will always have a special place in my heart as I was obsessed with it for so long before it was tainted by some bad experiences and the prequels, which I did not enjoy as much. We'll see what the future holds.

I do miss it all and wish I could reclaim it, if not just a little bit. Maybe I can win that part of me back somehow and adapt it to the person I am now.

Just my random thoughts. What about the rest of you?
moonshayde: (No Matter What)
I'm going to start posting entries on rewatching Dark Angel starting tomorrow if anyone would like to join me.
moonshayde: (Thoughtful Alec)
So, after making and posting some DA icons the other day, I decided I really would do a rewatch.

Anyone interested? I'm planning on starting later this week or next week. Care to join me?

Big Bangs

moonshayde: (Thoughtful Alec)
So, as we know, fandoms like their ficathons and big bangs. I'm signed on board to do the Supernatural Gen BB (heaven help me), but I've also been nudged a bit to do the Dark Angel one as well.

These are bad ideas. They are BAD ideas.

But...let's just say I were tempted to at least ponder the thought - not a word [livejournal.com profile] meg_tdj - then I might be open to some suggestions. If nothing grabs me, hey fine. No biggie and I move on. But if there is something that catches my eye, what's the harm in at least thinking about it?

So if you like Dark Angel and feel like giving me some prompts, please do so. I'm shakier with DA than I am SPN, and feel the most comfortable with Alec-centric stuff (shocker), but I had a lot of feedback saying I have a strong Joshua voice. I don't ship Max/Alec, and I'm pretty canon based. If I were to write anything, it'd be during series or post-series.

I *think* my strengths lie with psychological stuff and I'm a fan of action-based stuff. That is very broad, but there it is.
moonshayde: (Fog (Castiel and Anna))
I need energy. I am slowing down more and more each day. What's wrong body? Energize!

Anyway, a few things:

[livejournal.com profile] meg_tdj is doing an SPN rewatch this summer. She's already started and is about 9 or so eps into S1, but if anyone wants to join, feel free. It's watch an episode a day at your leisure, so no specific times are set up. I'll be jumping in this week and trying. I'm notoriously slow at rewatching anything.

Before she mentioned the SPN rewatch, I was planning a Dark Angel rewatch and just hadn't announced it. Well, I am announcing it now. Really low key and low pressure. I'm going to rewatch the series this summer/fall and I will be going at a ridiculously slow pace. So if any of you want to join me, that's cool. I'll only probably be watching 2-3 episodes a week, starting today.

There are no set posts or conditions or structure. Just thoughts on the episodes, some art if you feel like it, fic, whatever. I tried that with X-Files and that turned into nothing, sadly. So I am just using it as something fun to do over the summer and both shows don't have like 8+ plus seasons, so less pressure for me, LOL.

I'm behind on the TV meme, but I'll back to it shortly.

Yesterday, we did see some of the effects of the fires in Quebec. Everything was hazy and smokey. Yuck.

I had something else to say, but it's gone now. Ugh. So fatigued! Why?
moonshayde: (Max in Color)
All right. I'm play. I haven't done a meme in ages. Let's see if I can finish this one...

Day 02 - A show that you wish more people were watching

Wow, is everything down this morning?

Blantantly stolen from [livejournal.com profile] meg_tdj:

Question for fanfic writers: In your chosen fandom(s), which characters do you find the hardest and the easiest to write?

So I give you: Supernatural, SG-1, Smallville, and Dark Angel.

SPN

I find writing for this fandom to be HARD. It doesn't stop me, but sometimes I get emo and think I should. I think Dean is probably my strongest character. Most of the time I believe I get his dialogue and attitude right, and since I heavily idenitfy with his good AND bad qualities, I think I get into his head pretty well. But I can be hit and miss with him, too.

I default to Sam a lot because I find him more focused and serious than Dean. Plus, I like to write reactions to Dean which is easier from another point of view. Plus, I enjoy it. I have had trouble writing him in S4 because of the direction the show took, but once we got in his head the second half of the season it was a little easier. However, I honestly don't think I write him correctly half the time and it annoys me to no end. I have his research side down, but I seem to fail at his subtle digs and word plays. I get so angry about it sometimes I just want to be super emo and quit, LOL. I wish I could write him better.

Bobby and John have been hit or miss for me, though I've never written Bobby's pov (yet, though I have some planned) and I think I wrote John's pov once. But I have had them in stories, as I have Jo, Bela, Castiel, and Ruby. I think I do okay with them, but I haven't written them enough or long enough to really have an idea how well I write them.

SG-1

Daniel is usually my default, but that doesn't mean he's the easiest to write for me. He's in my field so I get that aspect of him and he's sympathetic in many ways, but I'm not the strongest with his snark. I really have to work for it. Sam is similar. I'm a lot like Sam, and I can do her technobabble just fine, but I have a harder time writing her because the show often made her an emotional mess. I liked her better when she was fresh and green and excited in the early seasons. I found her easier to write.

My easiest to write? The two that are NOT like me. At least not that I can see. I find Jack the easiest and I adore writing him. And I've had so much fun writing Teal'c that it isn't funny. Those two brought me a lot of fannish joy.

Smallville

I haven't written much SV fic, but I always write Clark. So far, anyway. I find he is a nice stable character and I can relate to his morals and good-nature. Plus, I'm an idealist. I especially like writing banter between him and Lois. Lois is a blast to write, but I've never done her pov. I seem more comfortable with being on Clark's side.

Dark Angel

I've only written a few, but it's no surprise that I adore Alec. Yet, I also find him hard to write. I find Max the hardest, and I haven't even attempted the other characters like Original Cindy, Logan, and Sketchy. The easiest? I was surprised that it was Joshua. I feel like I write Joshua best. But maybe that's just in my head. I've had a lot of positive feedback on the few stories I've written in this fandom, including requests for novels and long-fic. Maybe that's what happens when I fandom gets old. I know that from a writer's standpoint, this fandom could easily suck me in because there is so much to explore. I fight it everyday.

So that's that. I've written for some other shows, but these are the top ones. I find it interesting that sometimes the character least like me I wrote the best, but sometimes the characters most like me I wrote the best. So there isn't an answer that covers everything. It's all about context, the characters themselves, and the atmopshere of the show.

What about you?
moonshayde: (unlikely friends)
Poking in for a brief second to post this for [livejournal.com profile] twasadark. She has been waiting for it since October for those drabbles I promised and I wanted to get it up before I felt even more guilty. [livejournal.com profile] twasadark wanted "A little Hurt!Alec drabble that includes Joshua." This is obviously longer than a drabble…

I marathoned these seasons back over the summer. I just never bothered to post my thoughts on S2, though under the Dark Angel tag you can always find my thoughts on S1. I will finish my thoughts now, though my memory is a bit rusty. The episodes sort of blend together in my mind and I would have to rewatch to get a better appreciation for it.

This is a very critical (and super long) review so if you simply adore this show, especially S2, you might not want to read it. However, I will say this. I ended up loving the series a whole lot more than I ever thought I would or else I would never have been interested enough to write fanfic. I still love the concept and I'm not sorry I watched it.

What Happened?? )

I ranted the other day about how I hate commentary above cuts. I don't mind it for older shows. But if this bothers you even though it's an older show, I'll put it all behind a cut.
moonshayde: (cycle)
Oh man. I had weird weird dreams last night. The only one I remember? Dark Angel. Why the heck am I dreaming about that show??

Of course it's Alec centric... )

There you go. I am so sad that I dream TV so much...
moonshayde: (Fear)
This was written for [livejournal.com profile] da_halloween. I wanted to do something different so I hit a fandom where I am new. It is not my best and I'm a little disappointed, but I'm glad I could at least contribute. I'm not sure I'll continue to write for this fandom (aside from the drabbles I owe) but it's been fun so far, at least. I hope you enjoy it despite me being a newb.

Beta?

moonshayde: (alec smile)
I was supposed to have this done yesterday, but sitting down to write has been difficult - so many distractions.

I'll be finishing up a Dark Angel Halloween themed fic in the next little while and was wondering if anyone would like to beta it? I need someone to look over it for spelling and grammar because I get too caught into the story to find it myself. I've only ever written once for this show, so I fear my characterization is a atrocious. I don't have time to make major changes, but if someone volunteers and see something majorly wrong with the characters and canon, I'd like to know.

I'm lookign for a fairly quick turn around, but if no one can do it, it's okay. It's Alec-centric and it's about a haunted house. If anyone can, just let me know in the comments and how you'd like me to send it to you. Or just email me.

Thanks.

(Computer seems to be fine now, but it's still annoyingly slow. That I can't fix LOL)

I lost my entire post. I am ticked. And it should not take me an hour to post a SINGLE entry. Man.

Grr. Anyway, take two. I've made some icons, mostly Dark Angel, but some from other fandoms. As usual, feel free to take anything you might like. No comment or credit is necessary. Resource credits are in my user info. Textless are not bases, but I don't care if you add text to them anyway.

Multifandom Icons )

It's funny. I am more comfortable making icons for shows I am not crazy obsessed with while shows I'm deeply invested in are more difficult. I think it's the perfectionism thing I have. Well, despite that perfectionism issue, I am going to try to make some SPN icons anyway.  I may not one of the best, but it's fun :) [Poll #1247515]

Okay, maybe this will work this time...

My List of WIPs for Various Fandoms )

Okay, that's just plain crazy. I should have these done by the time I'm 70.
moonshayde: (alec smile)
Not long ago, [livejournal.com profile] twasdark did some prodding and convinced me to enter the Dark Angel Summer Mini-Ficathon. Since it was short and not much pressure, I caved and said why not? So I took a stab at writing a short Dark Angel fic. Not quite sure how I feel about it, but hopefully it will be okay.

Did TPTB with Dark Angel not know they were getting canned? Because, man, I found that finale to be disappointing. (Which is one of the reasons why I am always anxious to watch a new show - never know how it will end.)

I'll post my thoughts on it later and answer comments on my last post in a bit. I can't believe how fast I barrelled through this, though. It goes to show you what fear (of writing my novel), procrastination, and not wanting to have another show hanging unfinished over my head can do to motivate me.

But man. I was hoping for a little more than that.

*goes to sit and think*
moonshayde: (Egypt)
I've been really stressed, so I've found myself throwing myself into TV as an escape.

I'm in season two of Dark Angel now and...yeah. Way different. I'm not sure what I think. I like the characters a lot. I like the ideas and concept. Something is missing though. I can't quite put my finger on it.

But just finished "The Berrisford Agenda." Whoa.
moonshayde: (Max)
I had a little bit of a mini-marathon as I breeze through Dark Angel. My comments will be brief since the episodes all kind of blend together in my head right now.

My thoughts on the next batch of eps )
moonshayde: (Max)
So, originally I was going to sit down to watch the Farscape series finale that I've been putting off. or continue to watch the handful of Smallville eps I've missed over the years. Instead, I decided to start Dark Angel.

My thoughts...

I probably could say more and I know I'm missing stuff, but so far I've really enjoying it. I'm aware that the tone and content changes completly in S2, and that's a bummer. But I am looking forward to watching S2 for Jensen Ackles. I'm just pleased that at least so far the story isn't all about ship (and I'm a romantic at heart - just prefer good story) and that it has an intriguing premise. I hope the next episodes are pretty good as well. :)
