Because I had to write something. National Guard has me a bit freaked out sandbagging just down my street. Not betaed and very short. Wish I could finish my longer stuff.

--------------------------------
Sam didn't consider himself a nostalgic kind of guy. He did what he had to do, and tried to stay focused on the present so he could have a better future. If he had a future. These days, he didn't think past the next day.
But there were some moments he couldn't help but think about the past.
He looked out the windshield to the road ahead. It was dark, like many roads they traveled, only lit by the headlights of the Impala. These were the times that Dean would break out into song, or tell some only-funny-to-Dean joke, or start reciting some random Led Zeppelin trivia.
Tonight was quiet. Most nights were quiet now. Dean drove ahead, no music, no sound. His gaze glided off into nothing, his blurred eyes unfocused. And Sam swore that every so often, when a semi was coming their way, the Impala would drift over the yellow lines by a fraction of an inch.
Sam said nothing.
Deep down, he was on fire. He made a promise to himself that one day he'd find a way to stop both of their suffering. It was the least he could do. And maybe then, when they took that last final drive, it wouldn't be into the cold soundless dark, but into a bright sounds of something better yet to come.
