Yes, I'm on a bit of a SPN kick again. I'm sure it will die down again.

I've been poking around the TNT website, watching bits and pieces of old S1 episodes and something came to me.

In "Salvation," the show seemed to suggest that the kids that were chosen to be Azazel's "special children" already had some specialness to them. The mother of that little baby girl said something to the effect that sometimes she felt like the girl was reading her mind.

That's never really been addressed since, but I know that people speculated that kids like Sam already had some predisposition to being special before Azazel messed with them.

Could it be because of his "special" bloodline? Sam and Dean come from a bloodline where they can become angel vessels. Could old Yellow Eyes have been picking families that had a certain bloodline? We know the moms made deals and that is why he came to the babies ten years later. But it was just a thought I had.

On a random note, I love some of the lines dropped in the early seasons that have so much more meaning now:

Azazel to Dean: What are you and God gonna do?

Doctor to Dean (paraphrased): You must have an angel over your shoulder.

I also noticed that the online episodes have different music. I assume they had some rights disputes for either online or syndication? Some of the classic rock has either been changed or dropped. That's a bummer.

I've never actually considered that all those moms made deals with Azazel! But yeah, that makes sense, doesn't it? Huh...

I figured it was a given that those children all had special powers on their own, before Azazel corrupted them. I have a theory that the reason YED gathered up those kids and kept talking them up, talking up their powers were so that they would LET GO and be able to fully use them. Of all of them, it was only Sam that could never let go because he was terrified he'd become that monster his family would hunt. The only times he ever did use his mojo before Ruby got to him was those times he was desperate to save Dean. If you recall what Ruby said to him, she called him Dumbo and told him he never needed the feather to fly. I think Sam represses his powers because he's still scared of them, I mean, he won't even THINK about his powers. I imagine that by now he is convinced they are evil (even though they aren't).

And I also love how things that came before have even more meaning now, even though I'm pretty sure that was never the writers intention back then :) Aside from those you mentioned above, I also love what the preacher told Dean in Faith because it all turned out to be so true!

Yeah, I'm just starting to wonder if those kids who had special powers on their own are tied to the special bloodline of angel vessels too. It would make sense. But it's just a guess on my part. I have no clue whether it's right or it matters.

In my view, YED was definitely breaking those kids down later in their lives to make them break. Sam stood strong until he went kinda nutty after Dean died. I've been wondering that as we close in on the final part of this arc, if Sam's powers will reappear in a way that isn't linked to anything but himself. That would be cool.

I think the writers had a pretty solid map of what was going to happen early on, but not everything was planned. And they lie in interviews all the time, so I don't trust what they say ;) It goes to show you that when you focus on continuity, you can do great things with events, lines, scenes, and stories that might not have had the deep meaning they later develop into.

Speaking of continuity, I find it interesting that they've stripped Dean of his jewelry this season. We know why he no longer has the necklace, but we don't know why he doesn't have his ring or bracelet (didn't he wear a bracelet all the time?). Kripke was interviewed and said that Dean's ring had no significance. I'm hoping you are right and he's lying about it :)

I'm still crying on the inside about his missing jewelry, considering Jensen has no problem wearing his own jewelry to cons.

[livejournal.com profile] meg_tdj and I have spoken about the jewelry issue at length (since she knows how obsessive I am about it) and we have a few theories:

1. Chad Everett accidentally took the jewelry after his scenes were shot and the producers haven't bothered to get it back.

2. Jensen injured his hand and took it off for that reason. (This was obviously debunked.)

3. They just got tired of it and there is no reason. (I doubt this since Jensen has worn this stuff as Dean consistently for over 4 seasons.)

4. There is a reason that Dean is being stripped of trinkets that he's attached to and Kripke is a lying liar who lies (again). In the future, Dean had lost touch with things most important to him: Sam, his Impala, and he wasn't wearing any jewelry. He's pretty much died inside and had given up emotional attachments. Present!Dean seems to be sliding the same way without even knowing it. The jewelry could be a sign of this happening.

I know Jensen injured his hand and that COULD have been what started it, but it makes no sense that Dean wouldn't go back to wearing it after, ya know?

I think I'm going for option #4 cuz that sounds like the more reasonable thing. And it's true, if you look at Dean, he's being stripped of everything almost as effectively as he was in season 4. He's well on his way to becoming another human puddle, except I don't think he's going to have any angels zapping his memories this time to give him a sense of perspective like they did in season 4.

I actually have a new theory since last week's ep - that Dean's feeling THAT empty inside, that he really doesn't care about stuff like that anymore. I know when I'm really depressed I tend to stop wearing the trinkets that mean something to me. I don't know if that was their idea behind losing the ring, but it's the way I'm explaining it away in the context of the show.

That's different from the last one? That's how I've been reading it. That he just doesn't care. He's too hollow inside.

Oh... I somehow missed that one, LOL. But yes, #4! I'd say 5x14 goes a long way toward proving that theory.

Azazel did say he was looking for "the best and brightest," so yeah, I would imagine he found kids from certain bloodlines or born with certain abilities he could use to his advantage.
