Year in Review Fanfic Meme 2009

I do this every year and I always find it an interesting exercise.
Number of Fics This Year: 9
Wow. That is a HUGE difference. I have never ever written that little fanfic before. Last year I wrote 29. How did I manage that? Just what did I do this year? I worked on some original fic, but barely any of that either. This must be fixed in 2010.

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?
Wrote way, way less. I'm kind of shocked how little I've written.
What's your favorite story of the year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you happiest?
Probably The Genesis Variant. It certainly wasn't the highest in quality of my fics and its pacing wasn't as tight as my other stories, but I had a lot of fun with it and with it being such a tough year for me, writing something different and odd was enjoyable.
Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
It's really hard to judge with only 9 fics, but I guess my two riskiest ventures were writing more forcefully in AU's (like The Genesis Variant) and writing an intimate scene (Midnight Run).
Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the New Year?
Oh yeah. I'll probably fail but:
1. Work on my Playing the Angel series.
2. Finish a one of my long WIPs
3. Finish one pro novel
4. Finish two pro short stories
My Best Story of the Year
This is hard because I don't think this was a very good year for me with writing. I can't really point to a single stand out story that I've written. I'm not sure I have a best this year.
For character, I would say Work in Progress is my strongest as I really captured Joshua's character and used a painting motif throughout, while Under the Blood Moon (Fate Comes for Him I see as a long, well-plotted story with consequences. But overall, this wasn't my strongest year for writing an outstanding fic in all areas.
Story Most Under appreciated by the Universe in My Opinion
Just as I don't see a stand out fic in 2009, I also don't think I have something vastly under appreciated. I think Pixy Styx didn't get as much attention as I thought it would, considering it was part of a fic exchange, but it's not like it was some intensely crafted fic, either. But there's also Five Times Dean Was Bigger Than Sam which has a special place with me for some reason, and I expected it to do better.
Most Fun Story
Either The Genesis Variant for all the jokes and wing related humor or Pixy Styx for the crazy. I really had a good time with both and I think it shows in the writing.
Most Sexy Story
Midnight Run. Though, I don't really consider it a sexy story. It doesn't have sexual tension in it, which I like for a sexy story, but is more a tender and not-so-heated interaction.
Story With the Single Sexiest Moment
Uh, Midnight Run. Non-graphic, but the most involved scene I've written.
"Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story
Again, Midnight Run. I don't write anything graphic and I probably never will. But this fic focused on intimate moments and sexual relations between Dean and Jo, with the added weirdness of Dean having wings. So while I have no problem with it, it really does make me raise my own eyebrows.
Hardest Story to Write
Under the Blood Moon (Fates Comes for Him) was very hard to write. While I found most of it just flowed onto the screen, it often was difficult for me to write since I was dealing with S4 Sam who is not my favorite. But I really wanted to get into his head and show his struggles and his emotions, while still having him that taint of arorgance and power we saw in S4. I didn't want to gloss over that. I also didn't want to gloss over Dean's anger. Both brothers made bad choices and were very human in S4 and I wanted to weave that into this story. For me it was hard, but worth it.
Biggest Disappointment
Sleep My Deep and Quarantine because they just didn't gel the way I wanted it to and Under the Blood Red Moon (Fates Comes for Him) for the reaction I received. While the first two are more of a writing issue, the second one is more of a perception issue. I really tried to make Sam and Dean (and AU!Dean) as real and understandable as possible, even when they were at their lowest moments. Many people didn't see it that way and took issue to S4 Sam. In many ways I think people were looking for some kind of "fix-it" fic. I'm still not sure. I don't know if I just communicated my ideas wrong or if people don't see the characters the way I do.
Biggest Surprise
I would sayWork in Progress. I was really surprised just how much feedback I received on this short fic and how many people really seemed to enjoy it. I'm always surprised by the Dark Angel fandom. I get a lot of in depth feedback from people who read DA fics, and I've had multiple requests for fic. Maybe because it's an old fandom? Whatever the case, it doesn't stop amazing me.
So that's for the writing review of 2009. I may sneak another one in by the end of the night since I'm not doing anything.
