Okay, so why is it that my antivirus icon is no longer showing in on my bar at the bottom of the screen and when I go to the antivirus program on my menu and click on it, nothing comes up?

I didn't delete it. It was working fine just like 30 minutes ago. Where the heck did it go?

I swear, I don't need all these littler stupid things piling up on me when I have bigger issues to worry about. And I can't afford to pay for antivirus AGAIN when I just renewed this 3 months ago

*cries*

Try rebooting, It may have just popped off/not running because of a glitch. my AOL icon/program does that. Good luck!

I tried three times and I just can't get it to open.

Go to google, look for avira anti-virus, and dounload it. It's a fairly good AV and is free for home users. At least you'll have an anti-virus on until you can figure out what is wrong with yours. AVG is also free for home use.
Did you go to programs and try to open your AV from there?

I'll look that up.

Yeah, I went to programs and tried to open it but it just won't open. I get the hourglass for a second and then it disappears and acts like I never tried to open the program. I tried rebooting but still nothing.

Avira is awesome. AVG is good too, though it slowed my system down some. Comodo is a lesser known program - firewall plus virus - that's totally free and has been thrilling me ever since I got hacked a few months ago. (Comodo's free firewall is considered one of the very best, paid or free, available today. At this point, it even stops all known keyloggers from sending back your info to hackers.)

But before you do any of this, download Malwarebytes:

http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html?part=dl-10804572&subj=dl&tag=button

Run that sucker and do whatever it says, If, as codo1019 mentions below, you have gotten a virus that shuts down your antivirus, Malwarebytes is your best chance for finding and fixing it. That MAY actually get your current av back up and running, but if not, it's still a good idea to run that before installing Avira or AVG.

And if you HAVE gotten a virus, don't panic. Some of them are really nasty, but most of the time it's not as big a deal as you might think.

Thank you and Codo1019 so much. I'm glad that more than one person came up and recommended the same thing. I get very paranoid about these things.

You're very welcome. :) If you need more help, just holler. I know how you feel.

BTW, another good resource is:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/

You can read a thread where someone recommends something, and see whether most people seem to agree or disagree. It's a good way to get a consensus opinion on various stuff.

Thanks. I did run the malware thing and my computer was clean. I haven't tried AVG or the other one yet.

I'm wondering if it has to do with a message I received like a week ago that one of my files was corrupted. The error message said to run chkdsk but that isn't functioning because of the corrupt file. I haven't been able to find a fix for it. My virus software was working just fine until yesterday though.

I almost mentioned earlier that if it wasn't a virus, it was probably a corrupted file, either in your AV or in Windows. If chkdsk isn't working, that makes it sound like it's Windows.

Do you have Windows installation disks? Because I think there's a ways to repair your installation, and if you want to try that, I could get really detailed instructions from an IT person I work with (I'm terrified of doing stuff like that, but if she tells me step by step, it always works).

FYI I also had a virus that would not let me open my anti-virus.
It might help to rename and then try to open it.
You might need to run COMBOFIX. It is also free and takes about 10-15 min. Gets rid of alot that Virus checkers don't.

As a last resort, could you use system restore to recover the program, just in case it was accidentally altered somehow. Oh, but I do agree, that AVG seems to be a fairly good anti-virus program, and it is free(just for future reference) Good luck.

LOL @ your icon.

Yeah, maybe I'll try that if nothing else works. It's just annoying.
