Staring at the Blank Page
Jun. 25th, 2009 04:28 pmAnyone know of any supernatural beings with wings that are NOT angels or faeries?
*ponders*
ETA: As cool as dragons are, I need something more humanoid. Should have said that. But now I keep thinking of dragons. Thanks a lot! ;)

Date: 2009-06-25 08:33 pm (UTC)Some depictions of demons and imps show them wings, too. Gargoyles.
I kinda want to bust out my D&D monster manual now and see what else in there. It's my best resource for possibly MotWs.

Date: 2009-06-25 08:36 pm (UTC)Dragons won't work for me because I'm looking for something somewhat humaniod. Hmm.
Imps. Gargoyles. That's a start. I'll need more than that, though. Bobby has to know what he's talking about LOL
Thanks.

Date: 2009-06-25 09:00 pm (UTC)Well, right off I think of Dragons and/or winged serpents as well as Griffins.
Oh! And the Phoenix or the Fire Bird. Or the Thunderbird, coming from Native American folklore. Speaking of Native American, there would be many winged and/or bird related creatures taken from there. Although, I'm not that familiar personally.
Um, oh yeah, the harpy would be another one! And aren't Sirens human headed birds or bird-women?
I also found:
Angha: Dog/Lion/Peacock hybrid *I think* - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angha
BasCelik: A powerful and very evil winged man whose soul is not held by his body and can be subdued only by causing him to suffer dehydration - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BasCelik
Baykok: A flying skeleton - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baykok
Gamayun - Prophetic bird with a human head - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamayun
Jatayu (Ramayana) - A demi-god in the form of a vulture - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jatayu_(Ramayana)
Shedu - Protective spirit with the form of a winged bull or lion with a human head - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shedu
Strix - Vampiric birds - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strix_(mythology)

Date: 2009-06-27 07:59 am (UTC)I know there are some Mesopotamian and Egyptian images, but all i was able to recall was this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faravahar
And i think somewhere, psychopomps were depicted that way...ahah, Vanth, the etruscan psychopomp.
There are also the furies (Erinyes), they were kind of spirits/demigods of vengence. The anger of the dead, vengeance for broken oaths, or committing crimes against the natural order of things - usually killing a family member (like Orestes!)
