Fandom Post
Aug. 13th, 2008 06:15 pmI am reposting this for the new people on my flist. Hi new people! Let us commense the squee :)
The following is by no means a complete list.
Current Active* Fandoms/Shows:
Supernatural (The BIG one for me right now)
Smallville (My crack/fun show - I include other Supes mythos)
Semi-Active/Interests:
Dark Angel
Non-active Fandoms/Interests:
SG-1 (Still love it, but creatively I'm dry)
Star Wars (But I still love it to pieces)
Final Fantasy X (Awesome story)
X-Files (I miss you, show!)
Casual Shows:
Lost
Harper's Island
(I'm still finishing up Farscape, but I'm not liking it as much as most.)
* I define activity by obsession. The more fannish I am about a show, the more active I am, which means the more likely I'll post art/fic/meta/misc about the show of choice.
I love storytelling. Therefore, I love movies, TV, novels, and the writing process. Now, even though I love all these things, it doesn't mean I am a TV junkie or that I have a huge collection of books and movies. I'm also very picky. But the act of storytelling, epecially with elements of the fantastic, guide my life.
I'm trained in anthropology and history, and have a massive love of mythology. I also have a deep love for science, specially earth science, and I almost went into geology. I've recently discovered I want to be a teacher. I picked anthropology because it's cheating - I get to study everything ;)
I'm one of those annoying truth-seeker people who is always curious and looking for answers. In fandom, I tend to gravitate toward the characters that are idealistic, brainy, awkward, and who are also truth-seekers, except when I fall for the badboy which has been happening more often than not lately. *pointed look at you, Dean and Sawyer*
I always have a fave character for every show, but I tend to love my shows so much that I rarely hate a character. So while I love Dean to pieces on SPN, I also love Sam and Bobby, and John, and Ellen, and OMG, I have fallen for Castiel, too. With SG-1, my faves are Jack and Daniel, but I love Sam and Teal'c. And Cam! And...yeah. GO TEAM! You can apply the same rules to all my shows.
I'm weird with shipping. I have a couple of OTPs but I'm not militant about them. I can handle them with other people as long as I know they are together in the end. So, I'm all for Lois/Clark, Mulder/Scully, Tidus/Yuna, but I don't mind if along the way they are with different characters.
I also don't care for character bashing or pairing bashing. Bela from SPN or Vala from SG-1 might not be my fave characters and while I can be critical of them, I don't like to bash them. I can like Lois/Clark AND Chloe. I loathe Chlois. I can like Sam and Daniel at the same time. But I like to think we can all have our opinions in a respectful way. So I ask the same on my journal, please.
I don't mind slash, but I really can't stand Wincest. I can't slash in SPN either. I used to slash occasionally for SG-1, but I'm no longer a slasher for any fandom.
I do read fanfic, but it's very slow coming right now. Don't take my silence as disinterest - I just suck with time right now. I'll help anyone with ideas, though.
I don't really follow actors and actresses, but have a HUGE crush on Jensen Ackles right now. I am known to lust after Jared Padalecki as well.
I love music. Right now, I'm into Shiny Toy Guns, Muse, Within Temptation, The Rasmus, Kamelot...I have also discovered the joy of classic rock.
I am human, and therefore I tend to read/comment on the LJ's of people who read/comment on mine. This tends to go for fanfic, too. It's not very fair, but like I said it's human and I'm being honest.
I write both for publication and for fandom. I don't really discuss my original stuff here unless it's just general conversation, but I do have a filter for it. I do actively discuss the writing process and technique and general writing squee.
Fanfic - (SPN) When I'm reading, I like canon-based stuff. I like the boys to sound like the boys. I like plot and mystery, and heroic/funny but whumped Dean with protective and proactive Sam. But hey, we all have our own kinks ;) Humor fic is always a win/win for me too, as long as it's not too cracky or stupid. I like stuff that could be easily on the show. (This applies for all my fandoms as well.)
Writing Fanfic - I have a tendency to write plotty, longer fic with a range of emotion. So there will be humor and angst, light moments and dark. I try my best with gen, non-pairing stuff with a hearty plot with strong canon characterization. With SPN, I write gen stories focused on the brothers, but I have explored some Dean/Jo fic too. I'm even writing Dean wing!fic which I swore never to do, but hey why not have SOME fun right? I currently write SPN fanfic fairly exclusively, though I dabble with Smallville and Dark Angel a bit on the side. I used to be prolific in SG-1 and while I saw myself as a plotty team girl, I wrote just about everything.
Probably most importantly, I enjoy conversation the most. People who know me well know that I can be chatty when motivated. I love to be able to get into a conversation on LJ or wherever. I do not like when people try to be elitists or think they are so much better than everyone else. BNF behavior irks me. I'm not talking about people that it just happens to, but people that obviously use it is as tool. That's all I'm going to say about that ;)
I'm going to have to go back through the friending meme to see if I missed anyone. But I'm happy that people seemed to find new people to talk to.

Date: 2008-08-14 11:20 pm (UTC)There are quite many things we agree on. For example I also tend to have one or two fave characters - but I usually love pretty much everybody in my fave shows :-) Besides I also don't like bashing characters (or actors). If a fan doesn't like a character and says so - that's fine to me. However bashing is not.
And I'm not active in the Star Wars fandom but I still love it! Only the movies though, I never liked EU (Expanded Universe). And I love the SW Soundtrack. Do you remember the theme when Luke looks into the sunrise at tatooine (IV)? It's so beautiful...
Unfortunately I don't really read much fanfic (a question of time and also of the foreign language) but I usually try to read my friend's entries (and reading means commenting, too :).
I'm looking forward to getting to know you more :-)

Date: 2008-08-15 02:12 am (UTC)And it's fine if you don't read much fanfic. Naturally, I love when people read mine, but I don't go around friending for the sole purpose of readers. In fact, I roll my eyes when I see the hissy fits people throw when people don't read their fic. I'm mainly here to talk to other people and share my fandoms. I don't like to be pressured to read anything.

Date: 2008-08-15 11:56 am (UTC)When the new trilogy started I kinda liked it a little but it was so different from the old movies, it didn't really "feel" like it was SW. However the second movie was better, and I definitely loved the third one. I know it's still different from the OT and I also love it in another way. But I do love it (even though it made me cry a lot.... I'm a rather emotional person ^^). I watched it at theates three times and I bought the dvd.

Same here :-)
I also enjoy writing btw but I write in German since it's my mother language and I would never be able to attain the same level in English (vocabulary, metaphors, grammar, etc). So you will never feel pressured to read anything I wrote, promised ;-)

Date: 2008-08-15 02:13 am (UTC)Unfortunately, it's not very busy. Most people don't post to it and I am a horrible, horrible mod. With my RL woes and my co-mods having some RL stuff going on, we've slacked a bit. I want to to try to get it going again or something. I love the X-Files.

Date: 2008-08-15 01:11 am (UTC)I tend to be very similar, while I'll have a favourite character or two, I tend to like most characters on a show. I also can't stand character bashing. It's okay to not like a character and be critical of them but I've seen it where people take it way too far.
I would have gone into anthropology had I discovered it before I was half way through my credits for my history degree. I totally agree with you that the best thing about anthropology because you get to study everything. I find humanities is like that too.
And I'll be joining your XF community momentarily :D

Date: 2008-08-15 02:16 am (UTC)As for degrees...if I could go back and do things differently, I think I would have either double majored in anthropology and history or at leats minored in history. But I transfered schools and lost some time so it didn't happen. I'm not sorry I went into antropology, though there is really no career in it.
Oh yay for the XF comm. I will admit it's kind of dead at the moment. We've had trouble drumming up activity in the comm and all of us mods have had some major obsticles in RL that have prevented us from being awesome mods. It's sad because the comm was created to really get the XF love back.
I'm hoping to try to get it back on track soon.

Date: 2008-08-15 06:32 pm (UTC)I wish I had more time to write and chat, alas - but RL, baby, new one on the way, work and at-home-schoolwork kinda eat up too much time! Not enough time to fic, read and enjoy alot of what I love! As for TV - the pickiness is SO on my side! I have maybe a handful of shows I watch and the rest is kinda meh, lol!! And with a two year old, we have it on Cartoon Network alot!
*Smishes you*

Date: 2009-05-22 11:47 pm (UTC)I love storytelling too!
And wow, you're in so many fandoms. I can barely keep up with one or two. xD
Hope to see you around soon! :D
