Getting to Know
Jun. 23rd, 2008 11:58 amI know that I have a lot of new people on my flist. I've also had a very hectic schedule lately, but I'd love to start a conversation. One of the most important factors about the Internet to me is the ability to communicate and make connections.
So, in the spirit of communication, I encourage you to ask me anything you want. Is there a topic you would love to discuss? Fandom? Real world? Anything about me you'd like to know or talk about? New flisters and old, go right ahead. This is a way to break the ice or become reacquainted with each other. It's not a meme, but feel free to post something similar on your LJ.
If for whatever reason, I am unable to answer the question or I'm uncomfortable with it, I politely tell you so, but I won't close the door on conversation. So don't be shy and don't worry about what I might think. I'm pretty open-minded :)

Date: 2008-06-23 06:33 pm (UTC)Hi!
The pro writing has been going very slowly. I'm taking some intensive summer classes that seem like they are eating up all my time. Grr. I do have some deadlines coming up, though, which means I need to get my butt in gear and figure out how to better manage my time.
As for the genre, you know, I think I am settling into fantasy. Fantasy in the broadest sense of the term, however. I've known for a while that despite my love of science, I would never be a hardcore scifi writer because I just don't care for techy stuff in the detail that science fiction does. I also shy away from fantasy that is labeled high fantasy, unless it's very compelling and not overly cliche. I can't see myself writing it though. Just like I couldn't write the full out horror genre, either.
I'm somewhere in the middle with scifi, fantasy, and horror elements rolled into one. I think most of my fiction fits into modern or urban fantasy, but not everything. I also like to throw in mystery, suspense, mythology, and romance.
I guess the catch all speculative writer is the best phrase to go by.
Yeah, something like that LOL
What about you? How goes the writing for you? And have you settled into a genre or do you find it difficult to label your stuff, or maybe you jump around?

Date: 2008-06-25 01:55 pm (UTC)Do your genres ever cross? Or do you just have romance and then high fantasy?

Date: 2008-06-25 03:05 pm (UTC)If you mean subject as in like a discipline, I'm a huge history buff. And hobby wise, I love science fiction/fantasy/horror.
What about you?

Date: 2008-06-23 08:57 pm (UTC)I've been reading your fic a lot recently (I volunteered to clear the memorying/tagging backlog over on stargatefic) - tell me, please, what you do when you can't write? Like, you know, when you sit down to type and all the words are awkward and it takes 4 attempts to get one sentence down. I tend to walk away, but so far I've been lucky and I've never had a deadline or anything at the same time. You must have techniques?
*squishy hugs*

Date: 2008-06-25 02:12 pm (UTC)Your new name is driving me batty lately. I'm having a hard adjustment period!
Anyway, what do I do when I can't write? Hmm. I cry? LOL
And yes...techniques...sure...
Actually, I usually walk away. If it's not working, it's not working and if I sit there and try to force it, i will get angry and frustrated. If I find that I'm still struggling, I take out a notebook and start jotting down pharses and sentences to see if that will push me. It usually does.
I've missed plenty of deadlines though (this year) but that is from bad time management and my heavy schoolwork load. I'm kicking myself over that, but that is a another story ;)

Date: 2008-06-25 02:02 pm (UTC)I think Weir ended up being my favorite. I hated the way she was written, but I have kind of this inclination toward her that I can't explain. (Maybe because I secretly shipped her and Daniel in fandom.) I really liked Carson, too, though.
SG-1 is a tough one. I started out with pure unadulterated Daniel love. But Jack and Daniel have always been my fave part of the show. I love their friendship and banter. Sam was always high on my list too and I loved Sam/Daniel scenes. So, while my faves started out as Daniel, followed just by hair with Jack, now it's SG-1 TEAM that is my fave character ;) I love team stories. Love Teal'c. Love Sam. Love Daniel. love Jack. Janet. Hammond. Cameron. Lukewarm on Jonas and not so into Vala, but I don't hate any of them.
I fell into SG-1 by accident. I was on vacation and bored back in Octover of 2003 and found Window of Opportunity on Scifi. By the end of the week, I had gone out and bought the first season on DVD and by the end of the month I was barreling through the series :)

Date: 2008-06-25 01:58 pm (UTC)I can't wait for the new X-Files movie. I miss X-Files so much.
I'm a bit nervous, though. It's been so long. I hope the writing and the movie is good.
