Switching Gears

So, for the past week or so I've been doing something different. I've been working on an SPN fic.

It's a different experience. I've gotten so comfortable writing SG-1 that I forgot what it was like to have to struggle with new characters. It's frustrating but exciting at the same time. I have to think different and I have to write different. Will it be my best piece of work ever? Probably not. But it's forcing me to push the boundaries, which in the end will only help me with my own writing.

Now, I don't want to make this a habit - I can't get too involved in fanfic in any fandom because of the original stuff I am working on. But watching Supernatural and working on a plotty story for it on my own has been relaxing. I really need an escape right now and it's working well to soothe the savage beast within me.

Of course, I can't wait for the new SG-1 movie coming out in March or the X-Files film this summer. But for now, watching this show is giving me an outlet and I appreciate it. I so need it right now.

In the end, it makes me happy and that's all that is important.

However, if you like SPN and want to read a hilarious fic, I highly recommend Out of Mouths by eve11. OMG. I don't normally read SPN fic, but I trust her writing and this fic was funny, crazy, and in character. Totally awesome for her first SPN fic ever.

I have a couple of others I want to read (and promised to read) but for now, I say go read this one. Haha.

Welcome to the darkside ^_^ Lol, just playing. I think its good that you're venturing into Supernatural and writing something out of your comfort zone (okay, so maybe I'm a little biased because I've never watched SG-1, but that's totally irrelivant :P ). Its always good to try something different and like you said, it will help your writing in the long run.

Can't to read your fic when you finish it :)

First, thanks for the fic rec! Things have been crazy today and I really needed a laugh.

Second, you're working on a SPN fic? Cool. I keep telling myself that I'll never be able to write some fanfic for the show, but then I get curious to see what I could come up with. Who knows, maybe one day I'll get bitten by an idea and give it a go.

I'm a plotty type of girl so I found something I could use and sunk my teeth into it. My SG1 stuiff is better because I have a better handle on the characters, but it's ben fun.

So you never know. Maybe an idea will strike you and you'll find yourself writing :)

A plot idea I've been toying with is something that revolves around Salem, MA and the witch trials. It's a topic that interests me quite a bit. People believed there was some kind of curse put on the town and since then all the sheriffs have either died in office or forced out of office due to health concerns. What if it was all the work of a vengeful spirit who decides to go on a killing spree and tries murdering all the descendants of some important figure during the trials and even threatens the life of the current sheriff.

It's probably very cliched and not very original, but it's an idea I've had brewing for a little while. Not sure if I'll follow through with it, but who knows.

And your SPN fic totally IS gonna be one of the best you've ever written. I won't say THE best, because Echoes was freakin' awesome... but, you know. Close. ;)

Eh, seriously? My prose is really stiff and clunky. Maybe I can clean it up a bit when I am done. I've already gone back and tweaked some stuff. But the writing isn't very fluid on this one. I think most of the dialogue is okay, but there is SO MUCH of it. I swear, I need to get weaned off dialogue.

I don't think anything will top Echoes. Well, I hope my original stuff will, but Echoes truly was my fanfic crown jewel, methinks.

Not a comment about the fic writing, but Supernatural. I finally opened the first season DVD set I have and took a look at what was on the discs. Seems I've already seen, or heard about, most of them. Brrr. And they're scary, too.

Yeah? I was pretty fresh going into S1. I had only known a few things from people talking about them and I had only seen a couple of clips when my VCR ran long after taping Smallville. But I'm enjoying it. It's been filling that hole that I had once XF went off the air or when XF got crappy. (SG1 filled a different kind of need.) I don't tihnk it's as tight in some areas as XF was, but it's overall arc seems to be more concentrated than the conspiracy arc on XF. Anyway, I'm really enjoying it. I hope you do too. It can get a little too emo for me, but I like that the majority of the show is based on family, and not romance.

I have made a promise to myself not to go all gung ho fic writing with SPN like I did with SG1, and if you see that I do, you have permission to kick me. But this is a little destress treat. Since I have some publications coming out, I'd rather not lose the momentum. But I'm having fun and that is what matters :)
