Celebrating Finale Week: DANIEL
Jun. 18th, 2007 08:02 amToday, we celebrate Daniel.
Daniel Jackson - multiple PhD holder, speaker of many many many languages. Anthropologist. Linguist. Archaeologist. Egyptologist.
Daniel brought to the team an unparalleled sense of wonder, and often acts as the moral voice of the team, mostly in the early years. His curiosity and search for knowledge are among his greatest strenghs and also his greatest faults. At times arrogant, Daniel can be a dangerous force once he has his mind set on something. He's not just a man that knows he's right. He is right. And he won't stop until he's proven so.
At the same time, Daniel doesn't search for praise, awards, or accolades. He is content to learn and explore. But he's restless and that restlessness can often take him away from his friends and those he loves.
Like Jack, Daniel is no stranger to tragedy. It's helped shpae who he is and who he'll become. But in the end, Daniel is unwavering in his support for those he lets into his bubble and he's not afraid to die for them.
So, why do you love Daniel?
-----------------------------------------
Possible topics, but feel free to post anything.
*When did Daniel first start to show adaptation to the military mindset?
*What is your fave Daniel line?
*What is your fave Daniel episode?
*If you could sum up Daniel in one word, what would it be?
*Write a drabble for the word "unyielding" or "discovery"
*Create an icon on the theme of "undying"
*How do you think Ascension impacted Daniel?
Again, post anything Daniel related!
(And remember, you can always come back to share the love. Don't miss out on yesterday's theme which was Jack.)

Date: 2007-06-18 12:53 pm (UTC)Of course, despite Jack's claim that it was quite the military suggestion, I'm not sure I buy that strategy is an indicator of militariness (it may not be a word...). After all, it's good strategy to make nice, as Daniel usually is in favor of doing, so as not to piss of the galaxy. But there are educational values to that as well whereas in Point of View it was more, "What needs to happen so that we can stay alive right now?"
I have no idea if that makes any sense. I'll probably be back with other Daniel Goodness later.

Date: 2007-06-18 09:44 pm (UTC)And Daniel is always always keeping his mind on how to stay alive, aside from when he's dying or dead, of course. And even then, he still manages.
I'm not really sure when I saw Daniel shift. I think it's been so gradual that it's difficult to pinpoint.

Date: 2007-06-18 01:22 pm (UTC)Favorite Daniel episode is Absolute Power as it showed how Daniel's methodical way of approaching everything can be turned to the dark side if his moral grounding becomes skewed.
no subject
Date: 2007-06-18 09:49 pm (UTC)That's really what it comes down to, wouldn't you say? Because when Daniel uses that approach of his for good, the results are amazxing. But if his moral grounded became skewed, as you say, then the potential for evil is just incredible.
It makes me think of the episode The Shroud (not sure if you've seen that one? I forget with my flist already). Considering Absolute Power into The Shroud just makes you stop and think.

Date: 2007-06-18 09:46 pm (UTC)I can't pinpoint my fave Daniel episode. It's very strange. I have so much trouble with it. For the other characters, I can nail it well. Hmph.

Date: 2007-06-18 02:20 pm (UTC)O'Neill: What kind of archeologist carries a weapon:
Daniel: (raising hand) Um, I do.
Boch: Doctor Jackson, if you wouldn't mind
Daniel: What?
Boch: Treating my wound.
Daniel: I'm an archeologist.
Boch: I know, but you're also a doctor.
Daniel: Of archeology.
Now, don't say ka until you've tried it.
Thank you, Teal'c, this conversation has been...very disturbing.
A little more time in Danny's world. [gives me shivers]
I'd like the truth, with a side order of clarity, please.
And a certain someone already made the most awesome "undying" Daniel icon. ;-D

Date: 2007-06-18 09:52 pm (UTC)Really? You don't say...
I don't get why "A little more time in Danny's world" gives people the shivers. I must have been out to lunch in that episode.
So other lines I like, and not quoted directly cause I suck at that...are the Simmons and Daniel exchanges. Also, in Sentinelt and when Daniel snarks about where the bullets go in (to his knife). Oh tons more about I can't remember LOL

Date: 2007-06-18 10:05 pm (UTC)I love the whole dynamic between Daniel and Replicarter. And it's just that moment, where he finally and definitively has the upper hand against her, now it's his turn to play the mind games.
That's what I read into that line, and his expression with his eyes practically shooting fire (er, figuratively speaking...no glowy blue for Daniel here).
Those are great quotes too! See that's why I didn't respond in Jack's. Everyone said really cool stuff there. :-D

Date: 2007-06-18 03:30 pm (UTC)A few quotes:
And bottom-line, Sir, what about Jack? I mean, right now I'm possibly his only hope for communicating on any kind of serious level. I can't leave him like this, and I won't. (Fifth Race)
O'NEILL: No, no, I feel I kinda…I do appreciate that you were the one that came to see if I was ok. That…that means something.
DANIEL: Ah, actually, no it doesn't.
O'NEILL:Huh?
[Daniel exchanges a look with Carter and Teal'c.]
DANIEL: Um, we, uh, we drew straws. I lost. (Shades of Grey)
DANIEL: That's good, Robert. Be sceptical.
[snip]
ROTHMAN: It's a skull!
DANIEL: Not that sceptical. (Or pretty much anything else from Crystal Skull)
DANIEL: How's Sam?
O'NEILL: Absolutely no evidence of her secret friend.
DANIEL:How's Sam? (Ascension)
There are plenty of other lines, many of which are better. Aurora has touched on a few of them. But I think these touch on some of the things that define Daniel.

Date: 2007-06-18 04:32 pm (UTC)"Wait for me."
"I have no idea."
"This is meaning of life stuff!"
"What happens when you dial your own phone number? ...Wrong person to ask."
"Go! Just go! I'll stay and watch your back."
"...I'm sorry, Sam." (he was the only one who acknowledged Sam in ITLOD)
"Because." (I know most people don't like Spirits, but I adored it!)
"I can't leave him like this... and I won't."
"If you don't tell me where she is, I'll kill you right here."
"I made a promise."
"Well, think about it. If you know in advance that everything will be going back to the way it was, then you could do anything, for as long as you want, without having to worry about consequences." (And people think he's Saint Daniel. Shyeah, RIGHT.)
"Now, don't say ka until you've tried it."
"With all of your past experiences, Daniel Jackson, I do not know how you have slept well before now."
"Thank you, Teal'c. This conversation has been disturbing on... many levels."
"The city we’ve been looking for is under the ice of Antarctica...? Jack, we were just there!" (makes me laugh out loud every time.)
"Trying to leave? Sorry. A little more time in Danny's world." (like
"I'd like the truth, with a side order of clarity, please."
"Don't you ever give up?"
"Not until I'm dead... and sometimes, not even then."
I love the little bits where we see Daniel is a civilian: waving to Bra'tac while Sam and Jack salute. Fumbling with Zulu time in Tangent. Standing in line with his hands in his pockets while everyone else is at attention in Chain Reaction.
I might come back and squee about Daniel some more later. :)

Date: 2007-06-18 04:47 pm (UTC)I thought of that too, and I wasn't sure whether to put in the Jack thread or the Daniel thread. I always think it's really funny that for all that Jack likes to present himself as the "irreverent" one, it's Daniel that reminds him that he can do whatever he wants without consequences (WoO) or because he'll be in charge (New Order). It just seems to say so much about both of them.

One of my fave lines in the entire series.
And I adore when we see the Daniel as civilian differences, exactly how you pointed it out. Sometimes he waves, or he'll slouch, or he'll have his hands in his pocket. For me, it's the little things.
Btw, I am blanking. Which episode is ITLOD?

Man, how did I forget "Not until I'm dead, and sometimes not even then." Aw!

Date: 2007-06-19 12:04 am (UTC)I first watched SG-1, season nine. Bearded!Daniel. He's a little worn around the edges, older, wiser. Then I watched Season one. Woah. Long-haired, wide-eyed, fast-talking Daniel. It took a while to figure him out and what his journey was.
I do remember Daniel being able to shoot a weapon pretty well by the end of season one. Am I right? Or was it two? See what happens when there are sooo many seasons.

Date: 2007-06-19 12:17 am (UTC)And you're not mistaken. Daniel has always been a good shot. James Spader Daniel in the movie was a good shot and Daniel in the series has always been one, too. He just sucks at hand to hand ;)
So the myth that Daniel can't handle a sidearm is bogus. *grins*
So why do I love Daniel???
Date: 2007-06-19 03:14 am (UTC)My favorite Daniel episode is Lifeboat. Damn can that boy act! It was freaking awesome!!
Other great episodes include Legacy and Forever In a Day (which aired on Sci-Fi today and showcases the love Daniel found in Sha're)
Here are some Daniel icons...

Date: 2007-06-19 10:24 pm (UTC)My favorite Daniel episode is Legacy. There is just something about the image of Crazy!Daniel in white scrubs lost in the white padded room that speaks to me.
The best Daniel line is the one from Ethon; Jarred Cane: "don't you ever give up?"
Daniel: "Not until I'm dead. (pauses) and sometimes not even then."
The one I frequently quote is "I'm going to fall down now. Rest it means rest. A concept you should become familar with."
