To kick things off, let's talk Jack, shall we?

You can't talk Stargate without Jack O'Neill, the man of many sides, because only the man can stick it to the man. We've seen the military man, the soldier, the Black Ops specialist. We've seen the leader, the hero, and the friend. We've seen a man shaped by tragedy and pain, a man that became so wounded he nearly commited suicide, but we've also seen that same man refind himself and move on.

He may not ever completely heal, but he's recaptured some of that spark of life again. And it's this spark and need that drives him, keeps him focused, and allows him to keep those under his comamnd, his teammates, and his friends in line so they can live to fight another day.

As someone once said, and I don't have the proper cite, "Jack is a family man without a family."

How true. But in his years with SG-1, either on the team or supporting the team from afar, he's established a new family. They will never replace what he's lost, but we know he'd do anything for them.

Why did Jack take the Washington DC assignment? Well, I don't know if it answers the question fully, but in the spirit of participation and such, I give you this...totally unbeta'd though. :)

When Sam wanted to focus more on Cassie, Jack suggested the R&D job. He helped her pack, put her in touch with old friends that had a house for rent, and generally did everything he could to help her.

When Teal'c wanted to go to Dakara and take his place as a true leader of the Jaffa, JAck made sure a portable dvd player and the Star Wars movies were packed in with his belongings, as well as those smelly ocean breeze candles he liked so much.
When Daniel asked to go to Atlantis for the fiftieth time, Jack finally gave in and agreed to the transfer. When he signed the papers he added a folder that included all the things Dr. Wier would be required to do in order to make sure Daniel didn't work himself to death and how to handle it when he let his curiousity get the better of him and he touched the wrong thing. Of course, Jack had to admit (though he didn't tell Dr. Wier) Daniel'd gotten much better about the touching thing since he'd descended.

Once he'd seen his team taken care of he sat in his office looking at the transfer requests both for leaving and coming into the SGC. He was glad to sign off on Cameron Mitchell's request to come to the SGC and he relished refusing General Baker of Area 51's request to transfer Walter Hariman. Some people simply belonged at the SGC. With housekeeping taken care of, Jack picked up a well worn letter. One he'd looked at almost hourly since he'd signed Daniel's transfer three days before. His team was taken care of, Earth was safe...relatively. President Hayes wanted him in Washington, he knew Hammond was finally getting a chance at retirement, and Hayes needed someone he could trust nearby. Jack wasn't known for bending to politicos and Hayes knew he could do diplomacy, though maybe not as well as Hammond. It was a good offer but one Jack would've immediatley turned down if his kids were still at the SGC. But they weren't, or wouldn't be soon. Daniel was the last one to leave and he'd ship out with the Daedelus. They weren't going on missions, they didn't need him standing watch for them anymore. He set the letter down and picked up his pen.

They had good golf courses in Washington right? Maybe it was time to work on his backswing.

Window of Opportunity, Paradise Lost, Abyss. Those are the only ones I can come up with off the top of my head. I'm sure there are plenty more favorite episodes.

I think I've said this before, but I'm not sure. Daniel drew me to SG-1, but Jack made me stay and love it. I didn't get my first taste of Jack until I'd watched about half of Season Nine. I didn't know what I'd missed. It's been a fun journey to watch all those great episodes from ten years ago.

I love all those Jacks that you listed and then some. I also love Pie!Jack. Funny at its best.

Abyss - best RDA acting episode ever.

Daniel also drew me to the show - I jumped in during S7 and then gobbled the other seasons - but I ended up loving them all.

However, over the past couple of years I've become very cozy with Jack. Some of my friends joke that I am really a huge Jack fan, but just don't know it.

Ah, my favorite topic. One word to describe him?: True. Or possibly commitment.

True to himself, to his teammates, his friends, his country. He's the one everyone knows they can count on. The one they trust to see things through no matter the personal cost. He provides the safety net that allows Daniel to take ridiculous chances, Teal'c to turn on his masters, Sam to be a strong, smart woman. He allows them to be themselves and they know that they can count on his support.

I have a theory that Jack pretends not to be as smart as he is because he wants to allow Sam and Daniel to shine as the brainy ones. They're the ones that find part of their identity in their intellect. Jack steps aside and lets them be the smart ones and takes on the role of military regular guy. But he still asks the penetrating questions that get to the point.

Sometimes I think of the West Wing episode where Bartlett temporarily steps aside, and everyone says at various points "Leo will know what to do." To some extent, I think Jack is the SGC's Leo. He'll know what to do. He'll look out for his people always. And he'll never look for accolades for himself. (I happened to watch New Order last night. There's a scene at the end when Weir thanks him for his service and for all that he has done and sacrificed. Jack acknowledges it with a half-embarrassed nod and then deflects the subject to something else. I think that speaks volumes. He serves and he does his duty because that's just who he is.

I see Jack as perceptive, compassionate, tough, snarky, humurous, cranky, sometimes lonely, fierce, protective, complicated. He likes to present as simple, but he's not. He's been knocked down by life over and over, both before and after joining the SGC, and he keeps getting back. Sometimes he gets up slowly. But he always does. He carries deep hurts within his soul, but he keeps going. His life is filled with sadness and loss, but he still looks to positive. ("Where there's a will there's an or.") There's a minor key that runs through Jack, but in spite of that he is very much alive.

And those are some of the reasons that I will always love Jack. He's a survivor, and man of layers and depth. And the person they can count on to make the hard decisions, the person that makes they trust implicitly, the person that will make it all right. Whatever "it" is.

I have a special fondness for Zero Hour. I loved that episode way more than I thought I would and it was that episode where I truly fell in love with Jack. I had been watching the show "live" since right before the back half of S7 started and catching up on the prior eps. I fell in love with Daniel first and clung to him, but when we reached Zero Hour, I knew that Jack had an equal place in my heart.

He's just like that.

I love the dynamic of Jack and Hammond, particularly in the first season. I think Jack respected the uniform of Hammond, but it took a bit for him to respect the man. If only because Jack had less than stellar COs who do what is correct but not what is *right* for the people under his command. But then he saw Hammond willing to trust Jack's instinct on Teal'c, trust Daniel on his alternate universe visit that Apophis was coming, trust Sam's crazy ideas about to solve things, and trusted Jack to get them all home. So trusting the man in the uniform was a new thing for Jack, and a lesson he never forgot.

When Hammond found out he was going to have the infamous Jack under his command, the JCOS sent him 20 year scotch as a joke. He asked for Sam Carter to make up for the wackiness (not that he would ever tell her that). But then he met Jack and saw someone whose life had value in protecting his family. He knew about the loss of Charlie and saw how Jack was healing himself through his team and George decided to do everything he could to protect them. (not just because he knew the truth about Jacob Carter's past and never, ever wanted to be the one to call about loosing his baby).

They certainly never agreed 100% of the time, and George will always regret Jack's undercover work that almost tore about his new family. But when he pinned the stars on Jack's shoulders, and cracked open the 20 (now almost 30) year old scotch with Gen Oneill, he knew the joke was on everyone else.

*g* Thanks. I always had this little idea the SGC was kind of set up as a bureaucratic joke. So they sent a bunch of misfits and Gen Hammond was handed command because he'd been passed over for another promotion and then...everything exploded from there.

“Indeed.” Teal’c nodded solemnly. “He was a great warrior and he should be honored. His actions should be remembered forever.”

They all nodded and started thinking.

They stayed in silence for a very long time.

Tears started rolling down Sam’s face. Daniel pulled her into a hug. Teal’c put his left hand on Sam’s shaking shoulder, the other one resting on Daniel’s.

They sat there, the three of them, together, supporting each other, and yet alone.

I think Jack has the best lines. He just does. He has that everyday sarcastic, sometimes pop culture type of feel, but not to the extent say, Mitchell does. But it works for him and he does it such an intelligent way.

Ohhh Jack, how I love thee. I'm not as articulate or thinky as others, but I do love him. :)
As someone else so adequately put it a while back, Jack was the hub of the wheel. The other characters interacted through him. Daniel and Jack were the close friends, despite their differences, Teal’c and Jack were the warrior brothers, Sam and Jack were the two military officers and were attracted to each other. Take away the hub and it falls apart. And at least in my eyes it did.

What I love most about him is his complexity, he's a mass of contradictions and he's real. He's got a dark past and he can kill cold-blooded, yet he can be the sweetest guy with a child. He's just fascinating, not unlike his alter ego I might add.

Anyway I'm better at graphics than words. I've been playing with PS and thought I'd might as well share it here. :)

While I don't agree that everything fell apart after Jack left, it just wasn't the same. I'm very much a classic team ga;, and Jack really was the root of that team. He was the heart. he kept it together. But I still feel that even though we don't see him much anymore, he still is the glue that keeps them together. It always comes back to Jack ;)

You know I think if they had started to have the other characters interact with each other more when he reduced his time back in s7, it could've been a much smoother transition and it may have worked much better.

That Funny Jack gif is one of my favorite visuals of him. Hee!

I love those rare moments when we see him genuinely giddy or excited. Like at the beginning of Tangent when he's all excited about the glider (before it all went horribly, horribly wrong). It's like we get to see this glimpse of when he was the young air force officer who was just really excited about flying.

Yeah, it's adorable, isn't it? I think that's one of the things I like about him - he's childish enough to call shotgun on an alien ship, or to squee about getting a new plane to test-fly, and so on. In touch with his inner child. I think that's healthy.

The first one -- oh yes! One of my top fav moments of Jack, for the reasons you mention. Whenever that ep comes around on TiVo, even if I don't watch the whole ep, I have to watch that scene. (Well, and also the pushing-the-glasses-up-the-nose scene.) From his "who, me?" look, to him sitting down and being all, "Whoa! Whoa! No, no, I got it." And the later shot that is just seeing him physically *waving* at the asteroids to get out of his way... *ADORES* It is the *cutest thing*.

I love that he is such a BADASS, really, and yet he can still get all "who, me?" and excited. I love that he's a badass, but he's not afraid of looking like a GOOF sometimes. I love that he's so competent, but so low-key about it, and that he's so comfortable with his own competency that he doesn't need to be super-serious all the time, and doesn't need to have a veneer of steely-jawed control. I sometimes feel that's happening with other badass action-heroes -- you get this feeling that they are always trying to look suave, poised, and in control of whatever they're doing. Jack doesn't worry about that. He doesn't need to *look* it -- he *is* it.

There's a realness, and maybe a little vulnerability, in things like the "Whoa! Whoa! No, I got it," bit. An acknowledgement that hey, it takes a minute or two, to deal with this wacky stuff. And that there *should* be a sense of wonder, sometimes, no matter how serious the situation is.

Ohhhhh, Jack!

Jack is what made me go from a casual watcher of the show, to a fully involved fan (in the space about about 5 episodes of S5). I didn't expect it. I'd never seen RDA in anything before. I'd seen the movie Stargate, loved it, but was (of course!) more into Daniel from that. I didn't expect to love SG-1. I didn't expect to fall so deeply into it. And I didn't expect that it would be Jack who grabbed me so hard.

A lot of folks here have already mentioned key stuff about Jack that I love.

Other things:

I love that, whether he was acting dumb or just was occasionally actually confused, when the chips were down and it came to action, Jack was always precisely *ON* and there was absolutely no pretending that he was anything less than a brilliant military strategist and soldier. But he was also never a braggart about those skills, not really. (He was sometimes sarcastically superior about it.) He didn't need the spotlight on him. He wasn't actually threatened by Teal'c's physical superiority (or enormous experience). "Quietly competent" is how I think of him, as a military leader in the field -- willing to let others shine (like his pointed choice of Sam to demonstrate the P90's capabilities in "The Warrior), but always willing to lead from the front and do the hard jobs if he could.

I just can't think of instances where the show had Jack put a foot seriously wrong as a military leader -- except when they *meant* for him to, so they could make a point out of it. (And I'm sorry -- as much goodwill as I have towards S9/S10, or to a lesser extent to SGA... but I didn't feel the same about Mitchell or Sheppard, and that was a big part of my inability to completely warm to them. Jack was an all-around tough leading act to follow for those characters, but even more, when it came to setting the standard as a military leader, he set the bar *really* high, and I never felt like the more recent writing teams got that, necessarily.)

I loved that, between RDA and the early writers, there was this decision to make the show's arguable lead, Jack, into this really very quirky character. I loved the taken-as-given, basic military badassery, and how that got leavened with all these other things that you don't necessarily *expect* from a genre show hero. The terrible, terrible dress sense. (niamaea recently put up a hilarious but true photo-essay about it.) Those occasional flashes of surprise or wonder or childish excitement. The fact that RDA was always so willing to show us Jack feeling pain (stoic? are you kidding?), or being squicked (such as seeing Sho'nauc's symbiote in "Crossroads"), or being startled, or being absolutely freaking-out scared (I treasure, just *TREASURE* the scenes in "Bane" where he so freaked out by the bugs, and the one where he's dancing around in the Gateroom brushing at his hair because the bug is flying around).

Those are just some of the Jack O'Neill moments I remember best. :) *Being* cool? Yes. Always *looking* cool? No, and I loved that they let him be that rounded. (I'm sure I'll come back here at some point when I remember something else I should have mentioned.)

You touched on something that I've noticed but I don't think I've ever articulated. He's confident enough about himself that he doesn't have to be right, or the strongest, or feel the need to squash anybody down to make himself feel better.

I think that's the ultimate in confidence and cool. He doesn't mind letting others have the spotlight. He's not afraid to look like an idiot. He just is who he is. Kudos to Jack and kudos to RDA for being the kind of actor who's willing to lend the goofiness and vulnerability to the character. It's tempting to take a character like that and make him the proverbial "tough as nails," hardbitten military guy. Well he is tough as nails, but it's a toughness that shines all the brighter because of the other qualities he brings to the table.

The more that I watch and rewatch, the more I become convinced that Jack is the most layered character of the entire bunch. Not that the others don't have layers too, but I think Jack has a whole 'nother level of complexity going on. And the more I watch, the more I think that RDA skills as an actor are seriously underrated. He breathed a lot of life into that role and allowed for a lot of reading and interpreting between the lines.

I find RDA, like CJ, very nuanced in their acting. Most of it comes int their facial expressions and just themassive amount of meotion they can display with jsut twist of the lip, or the arch of an eyebrow. It's amazing.

As always, so eloquently stated. I'd like to add that one of my friends (and beta) once pointed out to me that Jack is usually write. I'm not talking about physics knowledge or a cultural tidbit. I mean right about a situation. he reads situations extremely well, probably the best out of them all. This is not a slam against Sam or Daniel or Teal'c. But their reads are rooted in different areas. And when they are right about things, they are right, but in a different way. When it comes to an event or situation, jack gets an initial assesment and is usually right. Sam, Daniel, and Teal'c's various povs help him to reaccess and tweak his initial evaluation to make it even better.

My love for this character is unusual for me. Normally I go for the geeks. But something about Jack O'Neill grabbed me while I was watching "Children of the Gods," and he's been my favorite ever since.

If I had to describe him in one word, it would be "honorable." He keeps his word, the letter and the spirit of it, and would never consider leaving one of his teammates behind, not if he could prevent that in any way. These Are Gold (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3325174/1/), otoh, is set between seasons 8 and 9, and while Jack isn't the pov character here, he does feature strongly.

If I had to describe him in one word, it would be "honorable." He keeps his word, the letter and the spirit of it, and would never consider leaving one of his teammates behind, not if he could prevent that in any way. He does his duty and obeys orders...but if those get in the way of what needs to be done, or what's right, Jack doesn't hesitate to follow his own judgment and take the consequences.

I think the thing that made me fall for Jack was his utter refusal to give up. Only Jack could have said "We're just- having a bad day" in a situation like that..

My favorite fanfic take on Jack's transfer to DC is Aelfgyfu's Changing the Guard (http://aelfgyfu.com/ChangingGuard.html).

It took me a long time to work up to writing Jack, but I finally did his POV in a couple of stories, Starting Over (http://www.mindspring.com/~redbyrd/startingover.htm), which picks up in the middle of the movie and ends in the middle of COTG. I wrote it to try and come up with some justification that the Jack O'Neill of the movie could really be the same Jack of the television series- and wound up convincing myself.

And I did it again in No Return (http://www.mindspring.com/~redbyrd/noreturn.htm), which splits the POV between Jack and the alien 'Tanner' in Point of No Return. ("Magnets." LOL!)

Honestly, I think I could pick a good Jack line from pretty much every episode he appears in. The show became much less shiny in S9, when we lost him as regular cast.

Hey, I saw this post and wanted to mention that I've been reading the stories at your site and really enjoying them. Especially Starting Over and the Abyss couplet.

Jack is just a fascinating character to watch and to write. There are just so many facets there to explore.
