Supernatural: Pilot

Okay, it was pretty decent. But I can't shake this really strong sense of deja vu when I watched it. Now, it could be my rabid X-Files days coming back to haunt me (especially since I believe some old XF people work on this show) or it could be my natural tendency toward the occult. As a child and a teen I read voraciously into the occult since I adore supernatural type stories -- which influences my writing -- so I'm left scratching my head after watching the pilot. And to think, I purposefully prevented myself from writing stories like these because I didn't want to copy XF. Silly me.

For those of you who don't like this show, please turn away. No worries. I haven't abandoned anything else. Honestly, the only reason why I've put off watching this show is because I like to be contrary.



Really, it wasn't bad. Ackles and Paladeki (sp?) have really good chemistry. I can see brothers acting this way. Heck, I can see siblings period acting this way. There have been times when my bro and I have acted that way. I can only imagine how much worse it can be between two boys.

I think it's kind of sad that I knew exactly what they were talking about. I think I might have gone a little too gung-ho reading all those ghost and monster books when I was a kid. But I'm a big myth fan and there's nothing better than sitting down with American urban legends. Everyone knows about the woman in white. I still remember her being featured on Unsolved Mysteries ;) Man, I loved that show...

So...don't have too much to say except that it's basically what i expected when I first saw it advertised on billboards before its premier. I was afraid this show would be a ripoff of my beloved X-Files, but it's not from what I can see. X-Files was mostly about conspiracies. Many XF cases had to do with the supernatural, but many more dealt with are there/aren't there aliens and mutant monsters or creatures not yet discovered by science (like parasites that take over your body, etc). So XF was based more in science. This show is more about the occult. So I like that.

I figure I'll enjoy the show unless it takes a stupid turn somewhere. But so far, the pilot was enjoyable and reminded me of all those days I sat mesmerized watching Unsolved Mysteries and reading my monster books. We'll see if the series continues to hold me.

Sounds like the reaction I had. I started watching it when several of my friends turned into rabid Supernatural fangirls (conveiniently as I was discovering Stargate) and gave it a shot because usually their recommendations are good.

I enjoy the show - I think the second season is better than the first - but I'm not drawn to it the way I have been to other shows. They use American urban legends/supernatural mythology a lot, so hopefully you'll enjoy that. And, yeah, they're is often some blatant stuff from X-files (um, so I've heard - I've only seen a handful of X-file episodes).

I'm pretty much the oppsoite though I wanted to watch the show since I first heard about it because it looked like a show I would like. Then the internet exploded with SPN love and that is a turn off for me LOL I can't explain why. It;s just if someone gushes over something too much, it sours my interest. I'm weird like that.

I managed to catch part of the S2 premier on a rerun back in Nov and I liked what I saw. By then, I felt like I'd be watching it on my own terms.

So I caught S1 on sale and I've had it for a while, just waiting to pop it in when I felt the time is right. So I did that last night :)

Exactly my take. I enjoy watching it. It's not an event. I can miss it and catch up later with taped episodes. I do like the chemistry between the two.

I caught s1 on sale so I took a gamble and bought it. I've been holding onto it every since. I don't like to watch something when it first comes out (usually) and people are going nuts for it. That's just the way I am.

Me too! I'm so contrary - oh, my f-list is going wild over this show? No way am I going to watch it. I'm the only person, I think, who has never see an episode of Twin Peaks, Friends, Seinfeld, or...a bunch of other mega-hit shows. *shrug*

I, too, bought S1 of Supernatural on a really good sale but my motivations were purely hormonal. Jensen Ackles is 12 kinds of ridiculous pretty and I wanted to stare at him study his nuanced and talented performance. Alas, I have this very low threshold for scary/creepy so I've only seen pilot because it scared the crap out of me. :|

I still want to see it, though. Badly. My hormones and my nightmare brain are still fighting for my soul. My money's on the hormones. ;-)

I'm a bit of a horror fan when it's done tastefully so the pilot didn't scare me at all. But that's just the way I am ;)

But I am bad for purposefully ignoring something people like. I don't like to feel like I'm jumping on the bandwagon for anything so if people go on at length about something, I tend to do the opposite. However, I wanted to see both Farscape and Supernatural before I heard of the hype surrounding either show. I just delayed farscape and then Supernatural because of my contrary nature.

So far, it's good though.

And I've never seen Twin peaks, either ;)

Because there were quite a few people saying they really liked Supernatural I bought the first season. I quite like the urban legend/mystery/(for the lack of a better word)supernatural type stuff. I like the mini horror stories and it reminded me of a few recent movies - Ghost ship, 13 Ghosts, The Haunting, Mothman Prophecies, White Noise...and Miracles. Did anyone watch that TV series. I really enjoyed that. Same concept of dealing with the occult but as a group with the underlying plot that one of them was 'touched'. The thing with Supernatural though is the style - brothers and the quest they are on. The style also attracts me - dark themes, dark photography style, rock music and a sweet sweet car.

I'm a big fan of urban legends and mythology and was a huge fan of the X-Files. So it was just a matter of time before I poked around to see if I'd like this. So far, so good.

It was the genre that caught my eye, but I got swallowed up by the characters and the genuine interactions of the brothers - due a lot I think to the chemistry between the two leads.

Since I became so dis-ilusioned by the utter crap that I now consider Stargate has become (YMMV of course) it has become my favourite show. But I don't venture into the fandom any further than those Stargate fans I used to chat with, that's probably me, I find most fandoms pretty scary places. *G*

I find it has similarities of themes with the X-Files but a totally different approach. The soundtrack is unique and the car gets more and more like family every episode.

So far I like the way it handles it's humour too, the whole show has honest genuine character situations without a hint of parody or back room snides of "oh this is just our tv show".

I'm hoping it keeps up this momentum of allowing me to lose myself in it's virtual world for 40 minutes or so a week. Right now the characters seem very much " real characters" without a hint of "actor" behind them - maybe if I keep right out of the fandom I can keep this feeling longer.

I still enjoy SG-1, but just in a different way. So I'm not as disillusioned as some people are.

And while I made some great friends in the SG-1 fandom, I think sometimes fandom can suck the enjoyment right out of a show. I haven't really touched fandom for any of the other shows I am currently watching and I do believe it's better that way.

But we'll see with Supernatural. Again, just like most TV I don't find it very new or original, but it's well acted and well written so I'll stay with it as long as it interests me :)

The reason I put off watching the show was because I figured it would be cancelled quickly, as things go with so many genre shows. I was seeing squee on the flist for a while, but it wasn't until I heard about the renewal for the second season that I started watching.

I've always been a fan of mythology, both ancient and urban, so that's always a good theme to draw from, but the characters are what really sell the show to me.
