SG-1 S6: Memento

Okay, so here's the next S6 ep I've watched.



I was just going to ask how the heck this title related to the episode. Duh. Nevermind...

Not bad. I enjoyed the episode. I'm a history/past buff, so the concept of the episode interested me.

This one screamed Daniel, though. It's the type of episode that would have been perfect for Daniel. I felt a little disappointed that this hadn't been explored earlier, at least in this way, while Daniel was non-glowy. There were so many parts where I just could imagine Daniel there and his presence was sorely missed. Like when the coverstones were found. The historian in the library. The Stargate as a myth. All of that just had neon signs blinking for Daniel. *sigh*

However, since Daniel has a tendancy toward arrogance and he can be a bit passionate when it comes to history, Daniel might have been a little too much for the sensitivities of this planet. Once he gets an idea in his head, he's very much an all or nothing kind of guy. His aggressiveness could have been disasterous.

I liked watching Jack once again play the diplomat role. Since Jack is a realistic type of guy, his straightforwardness tends to win people over and that worked here. He does what needs to get done, though I felt that in this episode he had softened. Again, I see that as something that happened over time. All the members of SG-1 have influenced each other and I felt that reflected in Jack here.

I loved the line, "the Goa'uld are damn litterbugs" (or something to that effect) and how Jack called the Star Trek ripoff at the beginning.

I liked the alpha male bits between Jack and Ronson. (Who the heck is Ronson and where did he go?) As well as the bits between the chairman and his military guy. They paralleled each other and complimented quite nicely.

I like Jonas, but I always get annoyed when he's super!linguist boy. I really wish they hadn't gone that route with him and instead had kept him more of a politics advisor and historian. I really hated how in S6 he suddenly knew everything connected to Earth. Though, Rodney annoyed me at first, too, because I didn't like him stepping on Sam's toes.

I adored the Jack and Teal'c bits at the beginning. I'm a big fan of their scenes together. *sigh* I miss Jack.

I always like Teal'c with Jonas.

And yes, I did catch Teal'c doing a double take at the guy in the white sweater! That was hilarious. Poor Teal'c. They've probably all since banned Daniel from ever wearing a white/cream sweater ever.

Sam didn't do too much but technobabble. I did like that she often slipped in to try to balance things, though.

One thing stood out and confused me, though. It's near the beginning. Sam is going over what happened to the buffer thing and Jonas gives an explanation. Jack was fine with what Sam was saying, but the minute Jonas spoke up, Jack looked to Teal'c and made a slight face. Teal'c sort of turned his head and then Jack rolled his eyes and looked back at Jonas before paying attention to what was happening again. I was a little thrown by it. I know Jack is not a fan of the Kelownans, but he had learned to accept Jonas (for the most part). I read this as Jack not too fond of Jonas. I know Jack was the one with the most issues on the team, but still it surprised me. I know other people probably read it differently. (And Jack has gotten testy with both Sam and Daniel in the past.) But I just got a different vibe this time. I even had to rewind to make sure I wasn't seeing things. Hmm. Oh well.

Whatever the case, I enjoyed the episode.

Now, all I have left is Prophecy! (And then stop avoiding Prodigy in S4...ugh, Hailey.)

I liked Ronson too and the interplay between he and Jack. I think the actor may have gotten a role on something else and availability issues ensued.

Interesting - while I agree with you that the "ep" screamed Daniel, it was one of the season 5 eps where I actually liked Jonas and didn't find myself wishing Daniel could be there (as opposed to, say, "Cure"). I wonder why.
It's possible I was glad Daniel wasn't there because my mom (veteran of many archaeology digs) was sitting next to me and started complaining that Jonas was really bad at shoveling and if it had been Daniel and he had been bad at shoveling, I wouldn't have been able to handle it.

I didn't catch the white sweater thing! I'm going to have to watch for it again. Also, maybe Ronson disappears because he makes Jack look *good* at diplomacy and Jack came back and pointed out to Hammond that perhaps Ronson isn't the right choice for a ship that will probably be making some first contact?

Do you dislike Hailey in "Proving Ground" also, or just "Prodigy"?

I hate Hailey in Prodigy. When I first bought S4 back in 2003, I tried watching the episode, got 20 minutes into it, and had to shut it off. Granted, back then I was all about Daniel and annoyed he wasn't in it, but I had such a major issues with Hailey that I couldn't continue. Which annoyed me because I like Sam. Hailey didn't bug me in Proving Ground. I rather like that episode.

I know what you mean about not being able to handle Daniel done wrong, though. He's done stuff before in the show that makes me cringe. But I can't complain since I have shoveled wrong...

But yeah, the lack of Daniel in this episode really stood out to me. I didn't mind Jonas, but I still hate that they just made him linguist guy so many times. I really like Jonas when he can do his own thing.

But with a Jonas-centric episode next, I am curious to see how it's handled.

Yay!! I was worried you'd tell me I was just hallucinating or something. ;)

I think this was the first ep of season 6 where I actually missed Daniel. I really enjoyed Jonas throughout the season, but when they raised the Stargate in this ep and it looked all movieish, my lip started wobbling and I sat there going, "Danieeeeeel! He's goooooone!" Which was sort of a delayed reaction, I know, but it really didn't hit me until then.

I was half way through the episode and thinking, where the heck is this sweater guy already? And then, there he was :)

This episode just suited Daniel way better than without him. So it stung a bit. Not in a way where I hate the episode, but it felt like such a tie-in to the movie and about everythign Daniel had worked so hard for, that not having him there just felt wrong.

But still. It was a good episode.

Heh, the cream sweater. I totally missed that until a few different people pointed it out.

I found Jonas a bit of NotDaniel too. But the Jonas and Teal'c show was pretty funny. I'll have to go back and look at that scene with Jack you were talking about. Was it because anything to do with naquadria and reminders of certain events has Jack get a bit...pissy?

Memento. Memory. Past. The episode was about a people who buried their past.

Someone needs to go back and look at that Jack scene because it's seriously messing with my head. I'm not even one of those people in the "Jack loathes Jonas" camp. I felt like Jack just used Jonas to let out all his anger with the Kelownans and over what happened to Daniel. He rips him one in Meridian. He uses him to join SG-1 so he doesn't have to have a Russian assigned. He barely deals with Jonas until I would say Shadow Play. I always saw that episode where Jack finally could separate Jonas from the rest of the planet. That was the ep I saw him see Jonas a bit more differently. After that, I felt that while Jack was still more or less indifferent to him, at least there was the start of a better relationship there.

I'd gotten used to that in between feeling until this episode. When Jack is arguing he should be on the bridge, he also argues for Teal'c and Carter--no word about Jonas. I didn't even know Jonas was in the episode until the scene I mentioned with Jack looking annoyed and pissy. So, it just threw me.

The conversation was about naquadria, of course. Jonas added his two cents and there went Jack...

I try to make it an effort not to inject too much of my own feelings into it, espeically when I fele like a crusader for Jonas. But that scene just set me off. I was like, wow. Jack...is so not over it.

I really honestly don't think I ever understood why so many people didn't like Hailey. XD Then again, "Proving Ground" used to be one of my favorite episodes, so... *grin*

She's fine in Proving Ground. She doesn't bother me there. But she annoys me in Prodigy. I got 20 minutes into the ep when I had to give up.

I seriously need to watch it again.

I think she's at her most annoying in the first half of the episode. Because of my schedule, for a long time I only saw the last half of the episode, and I didn't think Hailey was so bad. I wondered why people were so set off by her. Once I saw the scenes at the Academy I understood--she's a complete brat there. Once she's off world, I found her more likable.

I watched this again a few days ago, and kind of enjoyed it even though it felt like something was missing. I really couldn't figure out why, but I think you hit on the head. It really does seem like an episode for Daniel, and it kind of feels out of place because it was just a few episodes before this where I had warmed up to Jonas.

Plus I like seeing the guy that played the historian because I really like him over on DaVinci's Inquest.

Now I'm going to have to go watch it again to catch the bit with the white sweater because I can't remember that.

When Teal'c and Jonas are in the library, a guy in a white/cream sweater walks by and Teal'c does a double take. It's just one of those "aw" moments. He doesn't say anything, but he doesn't need to.

But yeah. I don't hate Jonas, but this episode just felt like a Daniel episode. Especially with the Stargate being raised and the discovery itself. I liked the episode, but it makes me sad at the same time.

I haven't seen any season six episode more than once, aside from the three Daniel eps, so I'm gonna have to watch this one again to see the white sweater thing because that is so very "Awww!"
