A Few Fannish Things (Multi-Fandom)
Jan. 16th, 2007 09:24 pm1. I am offically staying out of the explosion over SGA/SG-1 casting and plot spoilers. I've reached a point where I cannot get involved in those debates anymore if I still want to enjoy myself. I don't even watch SGA anymore. But I want to enjoy SG-1 while it lasts. (It's too bad too because I actually like all the characters. I just like some more than others.)
2. I have not decided yet whether to watch SG-1 now or wait until April. Part of me wants to watch but another part of me wants to wait and continue my SG-1 vacation. And it makes the show last longer. I don't know. So torn. Tooooorn. But I appreciate how awesome you all have been and haven't spoiled me. Thanks *hugs*
3. I am still set on continuing to play in my little happy SG-1 online. You all with me? Or at least some of you? I still want to have fun after the show is gone. We can still write and joke and laugh...it's fun here on LJ. I need some people to have fun with me since I've sort of left 99% of the fandom behind. (Forums, lists, and groups how I miss you!)I feel like we can make our own fandom filled with sanity...mostly.
4. On a big Smallville kick again. Yes, indeed. I don't really consider myself part of the fandom though. I'm not so into the fandom thing anymore. But it's my angst-free show. It's just fun for me. I'd forgotten what it was like to watch a show just for fun. It's so very nice. I haven't abandoned SG-1 though. I'm just tired of the SG-1 fandom drama. And I'm missing Jack :(
5. I hope to watch some more Farscape soon. I'm getting closer to the end of Season 3. I hear The Choice is next and that it's a good Aeryn-angst episode. I like when CB is angsty.
6. I have some MacGyver to watch. Anyone interested in this newbie's thoughts on that show? I'll be posting my thoughts anyway. I need to get some RDA somehow...
7. In the next couple of months, I may start rewatching SG-1 from the beginning or X-Files. We'll see.
8. I want to watch the first season of Supernatural. But I have been holding off because I have the sneaking suspicion it's exactly like an original fic I have outlined.
9. I will be making more icons. They're stress relief for me, but I'll share if anyone wants them anyway. I'll probably play with Smallville, SG-1, and Farscape.
10. I don't really have a ten, but I look forward to continuing to share fannish thoughts with you all. The last few weeks I've complained mostly about work. I'm hoping to switch gears and have some more fun now. You know, in between writing my original fic :)

Date: 2007-01-17 03:25 am (UTC)I still love SG-1. I've just really been enjoying this break, you know? But it's like coming home to family. I want my family to stay around with me ;)

Date: 2007-01-17 03:15 am (UTC)I've been thinking that I need to watch more classic SG-1. I think the lack of it might be hindering my fic writing somewhat. Maybe we should have a community where we watch an ep or two a week and discuss! ;) Only tolerant, sane fans need apply.
Otherwise, I might just do it on my LJ.
MAC! Mac is glee. I'd love to hear your thoughts. Although, if you say ahead of time what you're watching, I'll watch it too. I have a lot of DVD eps I haven't seen yet.

Date: 2007-01-17 03:25 am (UTC)I think that's a great idea. It'll be like a Stargate book club, except with DVDs and .avi files instead of books. *g*

Date: 2007-01-17 03:33 am (UTC)I have this love/hate thing going on with fandom. I'm so sick of the drama in every corner. it gets old after a while. I'm not asking for everyone to agree with me. I pretty much like all the characters. (Not so much Vala, but I don't hate her.) But I'm just feeling the lack of love, I guess. I don't want to be bogged down by spoilers and casting and ship this and ship that. I just want to enjoy. And I'm missing Jack so very much. I love Cameron, but I miss the classic team muchly. So classic SG-1 might do the trick.
I only have 2 seasons of Mac right now, so you probably have already seen them. But I'll give you advance warning anyway ;)

Date: 2007-01-17 03:38 am (UTC)(I'm DLing and watching the new SG1s. Well, I did it for the first one, and will doubtless keep it up. Will take note and be careful not to spoil you. I understand what you mean about wanting to take a longer vacation and make the show laaaaast. I just have no impulse control. If I know it's there to be had, I find it really hard not to do it.)
I'm also staying way, way far away from all the SGA/SG1 casting drama. It's actually not touching my particular flist all that much, thankfully. I mean, I'm seeing some meta about it, but I'm not seeing the actual horrid upheaval and the bashing and stuff. Everyone on my flist is totally sane about it.
I'd love to hear your thoughts about Mac, and have a chance to talk about those eps! That'd be keen. ('Cause, as the lady says, MAC IS GLEE!)

Date: 2007-01-17 03:21 am (UTC)3. I'm with you! *g* I'm going to start re-watching SG1 from the beginning soon, (I just watched the movie over the weekend) and I think it'll be fun to see them progress from the beginning knowing how it ends.
5. Farscape! I've watched most of the first season. I am in love with this show.

Date: 2007-01-17 03:38 am (UTC)You know, if we're all considering watching SG-1 again from the beginning soon, maybe surrealphantast is onto something. We'd just have to make sure it's a sane, happy place where our own biases don't get the better of us and make us go wacko.
So, you're digging Farscape? I'm not in love with the show, but it's nejoyable enough. Again, it's angst-free for me. The show is angst-full, but since I came in after the show is ended, I don't feel all the stresses of shipper wars and fights and such that happen in fandom. it's a beautiful thing ;)

Date: 2007-01-17 03:42 am (UTC)I think I've totally missed all the SG-1 fandom drama. I don't hang out in the communities where this happens, perhaps. I just write fic, read fics that look interesting (bypassing most if not all Sam/Jack and other such ships that I dislike), and watch episodes. And I enjoy them. And occasionally discuss them with other fans, or even some non-fans (I have apologized over and over for ranting about SG-1 and SGA to a friend of mine who is not in the fandom, but I've fangirled enough to her that she's got a pretty good grasp on canon even without having watched an episode, and I did talk her into watching "200" and she loved it, and this is a run-on sentence that will end now).

Date: 2007-01-17 04:07 am (UTC)You'll just find me being Cuba and hanging out on my LJ.
I've read the spoilers and casting changes and such and kind of go 'meh' over them. I refuse to get too upset about it. Been there, done that, wore out the tee-shirt. I focus on the stuff that makes me happy and try to tune out the stuff that might not. Because, really, nothing all that dire has ever transpired on SG-1, despite all the wailing and tearing of hair.
Which is my personal opinion only. I don't mind Jack being gone all that much, but I'm very, very glad that he's kept 'alive' and we see him from time to time.
I've downloaded the first SG-1 ep, but other than the first few minutes to make sure it works, I've been able to hold off watching. The quality is good enough, but like a lot of transfers, it's really too dark to see what's going on anyway.
I really sort of want to watch it as the same time as my friends.
And yes, include me in the SG-1 retrospective thing. I had a blast watching Season 4 eps over the weekend.

Date: 2007-01-17 04:18 am (UTC)I've been on this steady decline for oh...couple of years now. SG-1 was my first fandom. I never went that deep before. I've met amazing people. I've had horrific experiences. SG-1 has helped shape me and I am glad. I've learned many lessons.
I've been lucky enough to become surrounded by all different kinds of fans. I know shippers for every pairing. I know many types of slashers. I have team friends and orgy friends and gen friends. It's lovely.
I'm just constantly struggling against a tide of fandom baggage. Even though I've left most of fandom behind. I just mainly hang out here on my LJ. But I am very sensitive to things now over time. I want to just watch it, angst-free, like any other show. Just enjoy it as a whole instead of seeing this ship faction or that ship faction and oh, here comes this character taking over...it's hard not to think that way. I'm trying to deprogram myself. I watched most of S1-4 before I jumped into the fandom. I wasn't influenced then. I'm trying to get to a place where I can be sort of like that again. Or at least as close as possible.
But flist here is fun. It's fun to be fannish with people. i think the retrospective thing is a great idea.

Date: 2007-01-17 04:56 am (UTC)I never watched MacGyver when it was first on. I finally watched some episodes on TVLand and discovered I enjoyed them. Now I'm just missing the final season from my collection. There are some real clunkers in the group, but it's a fun show. And hey, it was the 80s, Every other person had a mullet! ;)

Date: 2007-01-17 02:49 pm (UTC)As for fandom, laid back is the way to go. I was young and foolish when I came into fandom, and I hope I learned my lesson ;)

Date: 2007-01-17 05:56 am (UTC)Seriously, the people I'm having a Gate Party with when the shows come back have already watched the episodes (and told me after the fact) so I feel like the only person I know who's waiting for the actual broadcast.
I mentioned it upthread, but I second the idea of a group of sane folk for early-season rewatching.
At some point I'm going to have to Netflix Supernatural and Farscape. The latter is actually in my queue, but right now it's so far down the list it'll probably be this time next year before I get to it. I imagine when SG-1 starts again it will renew my Ben Browder fascination (which has been waning since I've stalled on the season 9 watching) and I may move it up.

Date: 2007-01-17 06:34 am (UTC)Regardless of how season 10 turns out - and I mean even if it turns out to be the uttermost unacceptable crap to me - I'll still be a fan of the rest of the show, and a devout worshiper of season 9. Count me in, even if I'm not THAT fannish. ;)

Date: 2007-01-17 07:18 am (UTC)hehe I'm not sure how much fun I can have with the show any more, but maybe. I'm not against it. I've left it all behind except LJ, too, pretty much. I just can't go back to the forums, though I miss them, too.
4. On a big Smallville kick again. Yes, indeed. I don't really consider myself part of the fandom though. I'm not so into the fandom thing anymore. But it's my angst-free show. It's just fun for me. I'd forgotten what it was like to watch a show just for fun. It's so very nice.
hehe I've been recording it, but I really hate waiting for them to show another episode! *g* I wish I could go out and buy all the DVDs now to watch it when I feel like it. I suppose doing it this way will make it last longer, though, right? *g* This really is a fun show.
The one pairing I don't really like, which is the one they're pushing the most on the show, is Clark/Lana, but it also doesn't really bother me either. I don't hate Lana, and I love Clark. Chloe is my favorite character on the show, though. *g* I don't like the picture of Tom Welling that they use in the credits. It makes him look weird. Otherwise, great show with a great theme song. *g*
8. I want to watch the first season of Supernatural. But I have been holding off because I have the sneaking suspicion it's exactly like an original fic I have outlined.
No, really? LOL Maybe you could give a rough sketch of your outline for your story and I (or someone else who's seen the show) could let you know if it's similar or not?
I would love a few Smallville icons. Since I'm not in that fandom, I haven't seen many to snag, though some people post them with SPN icons, but I'm inundated! *g*
I'm waiting until April to watch SG-1, if I watch it at all. I think I will, but I really need more of an SG-1 vacation. *g* I'm not spoiled for it at all either, though I wouldn't care much if I was. I actually prefer being spoiled, but I haven't really been in a mood to seek out spoilers.

Date: 2007-01-17 03:00 pm (UTC)Smallville: Clark/Lana, also called Clana(I hate those stupid abbreviations), is the main ship on the show. It's going to be there no matter how much most fans dislike it, so I'm resigned to it. However, the good part is it won't last because by the end of the show Clark will have to move on and leave Lana behind. That's just the way the story goes.
Chloe used to be my fave female character on the show. Once they introduced Lois, she became my fave. Though, I just watched an episode of SV called Hydro and I thought Chloe was fantastic again. I think they'll be doing more with her character and that makes me happy. Clark and Lex are my fave male characters on this show. Not in a slashy way, but I do love watching their parallel stories--one turns into a hero and the other falls into darkness. Good stuff ;)
SUpernatural: I'll give you a rough sketch and then you can break my heart LOL It's going to suck if I find out it's really simialr, but maybe it won't be. Or maybe my idea is too stupid anyway.
As for icons, I'll see if I can do a variety this time so in case you want some SV ones, you can get some. Most of mine are Clark/Lois shippy because that is my ship of choice (though I don't want them as a couple on this show because it would ruin things), but I'm not a diehard shipper and I do enjoy plot and character. So I plan on making some others anyway.
Maybe it's better not to spoil with SG-1 and just take it as it is. I'm only semi-spoiled. But I'd prefer to wait until April. Just because this has been a nice break and I can watch other shows and stuff. Sg-1 tedns to consume me and I like this break :)

Date: 2007-01-17 11:53 am (UTC)Once I can get the DVDs of seasons 9 & 10 I'll be all about the discussion. Hey, maybe when you're ready to start rewatching the show we can do like a group rewatch. All that are interested plonk down on a certain day and watch the same ep then discuss to our hearts content. Just a thought. :)
Smallville...I hear so many good things about this show and I've been so adamant against watching it as it totally screws DCcomics canon...but it sounds so good! I may have to break down and give it a try someday.
no subject
Date: 2007-01-17 03:07 pm (UTC)It looks like the group rewatch thing is a popular idea. And we might be even able to time it so everyone can watch it at least the same day. That way it would all be fresh and discussing would be envigorating. Just the amount of interest across different kinds of fans proves to me that everyone felt an affinity to the old days and the classic episodes, way before their were massive shipper wars and what not. That makes me happy.
As for Smallville...you know, when it first aired, I didn't want anything to do with it. Lex and Clark friends in Smallville??? You can't do that! I was all mad about it, but it actually worked. And it's a show that is character-focused, so there is a lot of stuff going on. Sure, there's tons of teen drama and angst too, but I can dismiss it. And I did later learn that in one incarnation of Superman, Lex and Clark did know each other.
I reacted the same way when I hear Lois Lane was joining the show. Can't do it! But again, it worked. I don't know why, but it just works. Not everything works on this show and I don't like everything that has been done, but it's got to be one of the best reinterpretaions of the myth I've seen. And the way I see it now is that Superman is always being reinterpreted like any myth. You have different storylines in DC. You have the movies. The old series. The old cartoon. The newer cartoon. Lois and Clark. it's constantly being retold. Watching Calrk discover his abilities and figure out who he is is fun. Watchign Lex spiral out of control is fun. Watching Lois stumble into reporting is fun. Watching the characters relatiosnships change over time is fun.
I think it's all been handled better than the prequels for SW. But others would disagree :)

I'm going to keep having fun with my online buddies on the forums and LJs. That's the cyberworld I like. :) I've got two monster fics I want to finish along with a few short fics -- if I EVER find the time. I miss writing like I used to. :(

Farscape is amazing, and if you could, get a hold of the Starburst Editions...I love the commentary.
I'm sorry that SG1 is dying....fandom must be continued!
