I don't like either of the boys coming off as less than men, and I think you just hit on why the majority of H/C bothers me, for that very reason. I don't think showing emotion makes a man "unmanly", but I do think getting excessive with it is overkill. I understand how much the fans love the Dean and Sam moments where they do show they care and hug and all that. I adore those moments, too. But they're special because they're RARE. So there you go, lol! Then again, I'm still living by Dean's line from the pilot: "No chick flick moments." :p
MacGuyver Dean! Ohhhhh, me too. So, so much. I love seeing those street smarts put to good use. But I also kind of love randomly Smart!Dean, where it turns out he can solve mysteries, too. He's got a lot more going on upstairs than he gets credit for. ;)
