I think I'm pretty similar to you, though maybe a little more gen, even. I'm all about characters. And so I like stories that mesh with canon and canon characterization with plots hat make them interact, crossovers that are true to the crossed characters and have them react to each other in interesting ways, and AUs in which the characters are the same and only the situation has changed. When I like romance, which is rarely, it's because it's in keeping with the characters.
So, for instance, I like it in Farscape. Because it's about the characters growing, and growing together. All about their yearning for each other, for something else, trying to reconcile it between them. It's beautiful and I love it. (The one Farscape fic I ever wrote was a John/Aeryn.)
I haven't watched much X-Files (I want to, though!), but I suspect I would feel the same way about them.
So yeah, I agree. Bring on the plot! And the characters. :)
