Don't forget that in Gordon's first ep, Dean beat him up and left him tied to a chair for 3 days. Hey, maybe that's what turned him insane... ;)
In the ep you don't remember, Gordon kidnapped Dean in order to lure Sam to an abandoned house and blow him to bits. That was Ava's first ep... she had a vision about Sam's death and warned him, so Sam was able to set off the grenades before even entering the building and call the police with an anonymous tip about Gordon's weapon stash. And yeah, then he went to jail.
