Ficlet: The Killing Time

I'm making the most of my day off and writing up some fanfics I owe people and working on my original fic. Medication pretty much killed my appetite, so I have to do something on Thanksgiving that will satisfy me.

She didn't know what she could say or do to make it better. She didn't know what steps needed to taken to effectively reverse it.

She didn't know how to fix it.

And it was killing her inside.

Sam watched from an observation room at Area 51 as doctors and scientists alike struggled to deprogram Barrett. The interrogation was harsh. The need to break him was cruel. But there was no other way.

He had to come to terms with what had happened. They had to know if Ba'al had instructed him to do more.

The worst part was that he knew. His hard gaze passed over the heads of the interrogators, cutting right through the window to where she was standing. In his eyes, she saw the anger, the pain, the sadness, and the betrayal.

Nightmarish flashes of Martouf assaulted her, bringing her back to another time and place, reminding her of the dangers of her affections, of getting too close.

Sam wished it could be different. She wished it could be different in so many ways.

And it was killing her inside.

Nice little ficlet! And you know, the whole Martouf thing does put some of the decisions Sam's made lately into perspective. I was frustrated by her reaction to Ba'al threatening Barrett and to her reaction in "Company of Thieves" as well--because as a lieutenant-col. she should be better at making the choice for the greater good, even if it's a hard choice to make. But she's done that before, and maybe that's part of why it's harder now. I really love Sam! Even when she's sort of stupid about stuff.

Company of Thieves didn't bother me so much because at least Sam was trying. And her breakdown didn't bother me. I just felt like maybe Sam had finally reached the limit. I was bothered by her behavior in Insiders though.

But I think you're right. I think many of the burdens of the past are catching up with her.

Every once in a while, with the episodic nature of the show, I forget that these characters can have emotional flashbacks to similar incidents that could color their responses. This ficlet is a really nice reminder of that, and the Barrett vs. Martouf similarities are so eerie. Can't believe I didn't notice before.

There are probably tons of connections we don't make but are there, ready to be tapped into. It's difficult to always see the connections when many of them can be episodes apart. And really TPTB do not help by screwing up continuity and refusing to make strong connections within the episodes themselves.

But I guess that makes it more of a treat when we do find them.

At least that is what I keep telling myself ;)

I hadn't really considered the similarities between Malcolm and Martouf, either.

I really wish we'd have been shown more of Barrett's recovery...

But that's what fanfic is for, I suppose! :D

Hi! I'm glad that you liked it. I know that it was short. But I keep promising a friend of mine Sam/Barrett and I always end up working on something else. I thought this would be a nice way to hold her for now.

Say, how did you find me btw? I don't know many people that come posting around for Sam/Barrett so it surprised me!

Lovely little ficlet. I really love the comparison. There was so much under the surface in that whole experience for Sam, there just had to be. I'd been wanting to do something with it myself but hadn't yet had the chance (or organized muse). Lovely to read yours.:) You should do more with this pairing!
