Daniel sighed, tossing his pencil down on the rubbings that were spread out in front of him. Sam glanced up from her laptop, watching as the pencil rolled across the table and bumped into the corner of her computer. She shifted the screen and frowned. The pencil dropped to the floor with a small tap.

"Daniel—"

He sighed with frustration before walking to the other side of the table, grabbing the pencil, and slamming it down on the sheets. Then, he stalked away, mumbling under his breath, as he laced his fingers behind his head.

Sam brought the laptop a little closer, almost protectively, as her gaze fluttered over the etchings on the table. "We're almost done the first two lines," she said, trying to sound supportive. "If we can just focus our efforts, at this rate—"

"At this rate, it will take us years to decipher the text." He sighed and turned again, his movements becoming more agitated. "If it wasn't coded…." His voice trailed off as his irritation grew. Sam felt herself tensing along with him.

She understood Daniel's frustration. They had been trying to decipher this code for days – one that could lead them to an advanced civilization or what was left of one – but had barely broken through it. Daniel continued to struggle to translate the text without a root or point of reference while Sam tried to pinpoint some of the finer points of the code. She wanted to say it was logarithmic, but she couldn't be certain until Daniel could translate more of the rubbings.

"We just have to be patient," she said, dipping her head to focus on the screen.

Sam jerked, startled as Daniel slammed his fist onto the table and walked to where she was sitting. His body hovered close to hers.

"I've been patient," he said, voice tight. "How much longer do I have to wait? How long?"

It was a question that Sam had asked herself many times. But before she could try to come up with a suitable reply, Daniel leaned over and pressed his lips onto hers.

Her shock quickly melted into desire. Sam opened her mouth, allowing him access, as she pulled him closer. He was hot and smooth, tasting of cinnamon and hints of hazelnut. She seized him – drinking in his aroma, threading her fingers through his hair – and moaned into his mouth.

"Sam?"

Sam slowly opened her eyes and moistened her lips before clearing her throat. Daniel was watching her closely, his face painted with a mix of curiosity and concern, as he taped his pencil on the rubbings. She forced a weak smile.

"I'm fine," she said. She frowned, catching her own disappointed reflection staring back at her on the computer screen. "I guess I'm just a little impatient."

Daniel didn't seem to hear her. He adjusted his glasses and grabbed his chair to scoot alongside her. "I've translated two more lines of the text," he told her, his voice rising with excitement. "Who knows. Maybe when we're finished we could find something that could help Sha're and Skaara!"

Sam swallowed down the lump in her throat, even if she was genuinely hopeful for the same. "We just need to be patient," she said with a sigh.

Daniel paused, his brow depressing into the start of a frown. He eyed her carefully and for one brief moment Sam thought she saw something more in his eyes. But then it was gone.

"I know," he said. "But we'll get it sooner or later."

Sam nodded, pushing past the dull ache she felt inside. She reached over and brushed some of Daniel's hair away from his face. She just had to learn to be patient.

I sort of glanced at the icon, then read the fic, and then looked back at the icon and saw it in a whole new way, as an illustration of the story. That's just what an icon!fic should do. Neat interpretation, too. Enjoyed. :-)

Thanks. I was a little nervous about it because it's not really my forte, even if I love them together.

Oh, I loved that!

Very clear imagery, and it hints at a story bigger than just this one. Very well done. I really did love it. :)

Sam angst is harder to find cause it usually seems OOC but you nailed it nicely.
