SGA News

I'm kinda not surprised, actually.

So apparently SGA is getting cancelled. You know, when it first started up I didn't think it would last very long, especially with the casting changes happening early in the series. But then it seemed to be going on pretty strong around S2 and S3 even if I didn't like it. At that point, I figured they were going to press for five season. That seems to be the magic number for tv shows to better syndicate.

I do give the show credit for lasting longer than I intially thought it would, though. And it sounds like they want to do movies, so any SGA fans will at least have that.

Sorry, guys. It always sucks when you shows get cancelled. :(

I am bummed, but not surprised.

Aw *hugs* I mean, I don't like the show but I've had shows cancelled on me before so I know it sucks.

Really? Huh. I'm surprised, actually. I thought they were doing okay in the ratings. But then, sci fi shows are so expensive to produce that execs tend to get squirly everything but stellar ratings (of course you would think that people at the sci fi network would understand that going in, but whatever).

I wonder if the success of the SG1 movies had anything to do with this, if the suits thought they could make more money with a few movies than they could with another season of the TV show.

...it's very very wrong of me that I'm mostly disappointed that we'll never get to see Cam and/or Vala make a guest spot now, isn't it? ;)

[identity profile] moonshayde.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 01:05 pm (UTC)(link)
It's probably cheaper to do the movies.

And you know, I probably would have tuned in to see Cam or Vala guest star.

I'm really looking forward to the two episodes with Daniel. Somehow I can forgive the show's faults when my shiny characters are on screen. *g*

Or Sam and Daniel playing in Atlantis. That kind of bums me. LOL

But yeah, the show's ratings are steady from last year, but now with that DVR number, are actually 30% higher, so ratings wise, I don't know what more could've been done.

I really think it was that magic 100 episode number that happens at the end of this season. I think it becomes diminishing returns for a network to continue it after that.

[identity profile] 6beforelunch.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, really? I didn't know they'd gone up that much.

Yeah, 100 episodes is when a show is considered to have a shot at a decent syndication life too, isn't it? Definitely a cold business decision.

I think the original contract was for five years, and going any further would mean increased costs. They were doing OK in the ratings, but OK isn't good enough when the bill's about to go up.

I have the first two seasons, but I haven't seen anything beyond that. I'd like to, though. I dunno--I admit I feel kind of relieved that I know how much I'll need to see to be all caught. I'm following a number of shows right now, and while I like SGA and want to do some fandom type things, I'm more comfortable with closed canon than open. Pretty much everything I've loved and written for has either been finished--Star Wars Original Trilogy, Phantom Menace, Jedi Apprentice Books, Farscape--or winding down--SG-1 was in its last couple of season when I started loving it.

Except now Supernatural, of course, but that's okay. :)

[identity profile] moonshayde.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 01:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I was always a closed canon person, too, until I started watching SG-1. But even when I started watching SG-1, I came in during the middle of S7. Most of the show had already ended at that point anyway. Star Wars was the first fandom I was really active in, even if it was just mainly me exhanging stories with someone else. But I consumed the news, etc.

SPN is a somewhat new experience for me. I jumped in during the middle to end of S2 and the show ideally is supposed to be five season (if the network survives that long.) So it's a very open canon show but it doesn't have much longer at the same time.

[identity profile] tresa-cho.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 03:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Open canon is way too taxing on my fragile, easily-attached-to-characters mind. I like waiting till a series is finished to make sure I know what I'm getting into. Torchwood is a perfect example of why I should not be in active canon.

[identity profile] foolishcalling.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 02:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw man, that's depressing. :(

[identity profile] tresa-cho.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 03:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I watch a few eps here and there, but you can tell they were struggling to get people to stay on the show. Tapping was only there for a season, and Jewel Staite signed on after three years of production had already occurred. My heart definitely goes out to the fandom.

[identity profile] gategrrl.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 06:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Er, I don't think it was a matter of getting people to stay on the show--it was more a matter of finding cheaper actors so they could fire the more established older and more expensive actors.

If Rodney McKay hadn't turned into such a break-out character, he would have been gone toot-sweet after the first season, IMO.

I feel sad, coz there's no more Stargate on tv. After so many years. *sigh*

But I AM looking forward to Universe. I SO wanna see who they'll cast.

I am way bummed, but not as bummed as [livejournal.com profile] commander_d's best friend. He started shaking when I told him it'd been cancelled. Shame.

I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did, honestly.

[identity profile] crayonbreakygal.livejournal.com 2008-08-22 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Really bummed too. Ratings were up this season. Networks only look at the bottom line. SGA is just too expensive for them. They can do stupid monster movies and make money in the blink of an eye. Well, at least there will be movies.

[identity profile] jessm78.livejournal.com 2008-08-23 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
I was pretty surprised when I first heard it (just got back from vacation today), but after doing some thinking and digesting the news, I'm not as shocked as I was. Disappointed, yeah, but all the cast changes had me wondering if something was up.

I was never quite as invested in SGA as I was in SG-1 (well, the first 8 or so seasons of SG-1), but I always tuned in and I have the first few seasons on DVD. I grew to enjoy the characters. I hear there is a movie in the works, so I guess that is something. Still am a bit sad we won't get to see Sam and Daniel in Atlantis. :(

I am somewhat curious about Universe. I haven't been following the articles and whatnot on that show much. I just hope they'll be all new characters that I can grow to like as I did those in SGA.
