Half-fanfic/Half-original

That is where my brain is right now.

Fanfic
Still obsessed with fic of the Supernatural variety, though I've been a little nostalgic for SG-1 lately. And Smallville. But currently, I've been spending some time working on my wing!fic series for SPN. The sad part is that I have most of the series planned out and I have fun with it. It gives me something to work on that's a bit stress free. I've just struggled with having the time. I'd say that I'm about 3/4 of the way through the current fic I'm writing in the series. If I'm lucky, I'll finish another scene tonight.

I'm about near the climax and then I'll have the wrap up scenes. As always, my philosophy on LJ is not to post it until it's finished or a couple of scenes away from completed. However, I'm not as anal about it on fanfiction.net where I've posted a few chapters to see how it would look. I don't read WIPs myself, but if anyone is interested in the wing!fic universe, you can check out the first four chapters there: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/9284489/1/The-Second-Deviation

No worries if you pass. I'll post it here for anyone interested when it's done anyway. :)

Original
As for my original stuff, I had a breakthrough this month and it's taken a new direction. The first time in a long time I feel like I know what I'm doing with it. It's a good feeling. It's hard to explain. but I think it's some kind of combo X-Files meets Warehouse 13 meets Supernatural. That's a guesstimate. Contemporary/urban fantasy is my main genre of writing. I tend to sway towards anything with a supernatural or paranormal flare. I'm interested to see where this rewrite takes me. I also need to work on some other works to send back to an editor interested in my stuff.

How goes the writing front with my writer friends?

like a dog to its vomit, I have returned to my folly Namely, I've taken to poking at some of my eternal WIPs again. There's the Dean/Cassie fic that was for the *2011* Reverse Big Bang. (Officially, I published it, but it wasn't really done. So shame on me.) I may actually have a chance of finishing it at some point before the heat death of the universe. I say Dean/Cassie, but man, it still feels so gen. Which is to say, to me it feels like a story about the people, not the relationship. The vibe I get from reading it over isn't shippy, it's more like...oh, the way running into someone who knew you way back when somehow bridges the gap between now and your younger self, makes you see things in a new way.... and that's when I'm trying to be shippy. I may throw in some sex just to prove to myself that I can quit writing gen any time I want ;). And that's just the beginning of the pile. I have a few other stories weighing on my conscience.

But I am so excited for your wing!verse fic. So I am a terrible hypocrite, because my reaction is, "write! write more! I LOVE THIS STORY!"

Hey I remember you telling me about that Dean/Cassie fic. 2011?! Okay, I don't feel so bad anymore. I refuse to acknowledge the last time I posted fanfic or even started the wing stories. *denial*

The gen/ship thing is a tricky slope to navigate. I say if it's about a relationship, it's ship and if it's not, then it's gen.

But even that gets complicated. I mean look at Dean/Cassie. That's canon. They loved each other and had a relationship. Why shouldn't you label it gen? Or a fic that has Dean/Lisa calling each other while Dean's off on a hunt? Heck, even my beloved Dean/Jo is canon to a certain extent. If I wrote a fic where they flirted and had feelings but didn't get act on it, why can't I call that gen? That's what happened on the show.

But people associate gen = no romance, and that's just not true of the show. Sam and Dean have had multiple relationships. So it's tricky.

If I suddenly wrote Jo and Dean having a long-term sexual relationship, I've changed canon and that would be ship to me. There is so much gray area, especially with writers who don't just write romantic relationships, but see various relationships as part of a bigger picture, just part of life and who we are and who we become.

And thank you for being patient about the wing!fic. It's such a labor of love and sooo fanon, that it makes me happy that I know other people enjoy it too. I thought I was crazy for writing it. Turns out that there are a few people who like it too :)

I think the definition of gen really depends on the fandom. My own personal definition of gen is no shipping, except canon relationships that and are either background *or* are central to the character's story...or non-canonical relationships that are super background, with the exception of Wincest. In Supernatural, the gen community seems to have evolved as a response to the early focus on incest. I mean, it's not everyone's cup of tea, so that makes sense, and so for me, even the most implicit, non-sexual story that has Dean and Sam in a romantic relationship is never, ever going to be gen for me.

But on the relationship stuff- I mean, a story about preseries John (vengeful!john or just!married!john or whatever) that avoids exploring his relationship to and with Mary is somewhat hamstrung.

Yay! :) I need that feeling again re: my trilogy. It's been on hiatus all year; hit a roadblock last November. Something about the plot stopped working for me, so I've been slowly going through the whole thing trying to find the 'problem area'.

In the meantime, I've been working on a book series idea. Spec fic (fantasy/scifi) again, but more modern-day. My protagonist is an OC from one of my Smallville fanfics. :D I've figured out the plots and titles for the first 5 books, as well as a few recurring characters. I am writing him into another 'fanfic', but it's mostly for my own enjoyment and working out his characterisation - especially how he interacts with other people.

I won't get started on the actual book series until my trilogy is done (& almost-ready for publishing). But having this series project in-the-works makes me especially eager to get the trilogy story complete.

Sorry to hear that you stalled. Writing is hard!

But it's also great that you have all these other ideas waiting for you. That's a great sign!

I'm glad you're writing and know where to take it!

I can't remember the last time I wrote any fiction. I've signed up for an SG-1 friendship ficathon to make myself do something.
