SG-1 S6: Prophecy

I actually really enjoyed this episode.

I'm not overly fond of Jonas. Not because he came in as a "replacement" for Daniel's role, but mainly because I can't stand that goofy smile of his and that he was poorly written most of the time. I'm also not very fond of Corin Nemec's acting style on the show. It's just that I found Jonas too convenient with all his abilities, like with his speed of acquiring knowledge. When he wasn't imitating Daniel and allowed to be his own character, he was quite good.

It was said within the episode that he shouldn't need to proove himself. That he was valuable just as himself. I wish the writers had realized that earlier.

That being said, this episode was a good one for Jonas. We saw his continuing need to prove himself and seek approval from the SGC. I've always been fascinated with storyines that go into predetermination versus a range of probabilities, so that was a lot of fun. And Jonas didn't smile in this episode much at all and that was a huge BONUS.

His scenes with Sam were fantastic. I really enjoyed the interactions they had. And I had a total geek out moment when Sam was talking about physics to Jonas. I love science!Sam.

Confused, though. Just a couple episodes back in Memento, Jack had this indifferent, almost cold attitude toward Jonas. I wrote about it because it surprised me that Jack would still act that way toward Jonas. He'd been on the team for almost a year. That kind of attitude at the beginning of the season made sense, but in Memento it didn't. Then again, for the entire season I never really saw Jack give much attention to Jonas aside just seeing him as teammate. And to be fair, Jack's coldness in Memento stemmed from a naquadria conversation and I don't think that topic is high on Jack's list, given how he feels about the Kelownan people. I saw his anger at Jonas start to change in Shadow Play, the episode I view as the point where Jack stops seeing Jonas as a representation of everything bad that happened in Meridian and instead focuses that anger on the Kelownan people themselves. I see that Jack stopped seeing Jonas as a Kelownan there and more of an ally, part of the SGC.

But I guess it took until Prophecy for Jack to warm up to him, as Sam said. Jack is not one to really open up to people. He's never opened up to Jonas. But at least in Prophecy I see him taking the steps of seeing Jonas as more than just a coworker on his team. That was a nice touch since Jack does not trust people easily. He didn't like Daniel until he proved himself worthy in the movie. It even took him a while to open up to Sam. (Teal'c is different -- maybe because Jack and Teal'c had so much in common Jack could just read him right away.) So, I guess the fact it took him all season to finally start to like Jonas is very much in character for him. In that context, maybe Memento makes sense. It's just too little, too late ;)

Janet was fantastic in this episode. I really really liked the touch that she wasn't the surgeon. Sometimes SG-1 forgets that their important characters don't have to be an expert in everything, so I appreciated that there was another doctor that was running the surgery on Jonas. I really do wish we could have seen more interaction between Janet and other medical staff throughout the series.

Teal'c was steady throughout the episode and I loved his ever-present stableness. He didn't have much to do, but Jack and Teal'c scenes are always great. He mostly played Jaffa/Goa'uld exposition boy, though.

Loved the scene when in the vision they were all getting shot. Bye Pierce. Bye Teal'c. (But dude, why did you stand up?) And then Jack, alone, zatting away as the Jaffa closed in on him. You knew that didn't end well.

I miss Hammond. I heart Hammond. And that "vision" where he is hurt and gets blown away? Aw. I need...Hammond fic or something.

And I really loved the ending. Jack finally acknowledging Jonas. And especially, that nice moment between Sam and Jonas where they discuss the questions about foretelling the future. His visions were not set in stone, yet there was the contridiction that the world's prophecy had been fulfilled. And that paradox was never answered which makes it great :)

So all in all, I was satisifed with this episode. Yay!

And now, I have completed my viewing of S6. Sure took me long enough *growls at self* I only have one episode left that I have purposefully been ignoring *sigh* I need to watch S4 Prodigy. I heard the Jack and Teal'c parts were awesome. But ugh, Hailey. I need to be strong.

Prophecy for me is always the episode I'll remember as "That one where prescience gets the coolest explanation ever". Because the way they say it, it could totally happen.

I started liking Jonas about now (pity really, this is what, the third last ep?) when he finally struck out from Daniel's shadow and they stop making fun of him.

I also don't mind the smile much. Because it gives me the wobbles and I am a helpless fangirl.

Do you mean ever or in S6? Because it was the episode that aired right before the finale, and in the finale Daniel was back and being floaty.

So...poor Jonas really didn't come into his own until the very end. Doesn't seem fair, but oh well. It's a sahem really since in this episode they were treating him decently, especially Jack.

He has a nice smile. it just annoyed me that it seemed to be set to permenent LOL

I meant season six. I was counting both Fallen and...Homecoming, because he's in them too.

I didn't think that Prodigy was too bad. There were some fun moments between Jack and the scientists. And also I think kind of a nice moment where Carter sort of lays out how and why Jack makes decisions differently than someone would coming from a scientific perspective. Hailey's a little bit annoying, but I didn't think it was a bad episode.

[identity profile] moonshayde.livejournal.com 2007-03-25 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
It probably wasn't a bad episode. I started watching it when I first got the DVDs way back. Sam's background? Woohoo! And then i got 20 minutes in and I was bored because Hailey was annoying me.

Apparently, I should have stuck it out because the Jack and Teal'c stuff were great. I'm just been avoiding the ep every since.

Hailey didn't bug me in Proving Ground. I'm not sure what set me off in this ep.

[identity profile] dknightshade.livejournal.com 2007-03-25 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
She was definitely different in Proving Ground. Definitely still a little arrogant, but not nearly as bad as the beginning of Prodigy.

Prphecy was one of the few S6 episodes that I liked. Being a Daniel fan when I entered the fandom I was against Jonas. But, the more I watched the Season on DVD's I didn't mind him much. Keep in mind, Jonas still annoys me half the time. :-) Corin Nemic and JR Bourne have the same you're-making-me-blind white smile.

[identity profile] moonshayde.livejournal.com 2007-03-25 06:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I can take JR Bourne, but maybe that's because he was only a recurring character. And his smile didn't bug me. it seemed so wrong for a Tok'ra to smile that much so I felt that was quite subversive of him ;)

But when I first started watching this show, I watched for two reasons: Daniel and the classic team. So, S6 wasn't very high on my list of priorities.

After a couple of years, I got over my anti-Jonasness, broadened my horizons, and started watching S6. Not a bad season, but Jonas just was not handled well which makes me sad. But I thought this was a great episode for him :)

Wow, you finished watching season 6! I feel as though this is a sign the world is ending or something... :P

Then hanker down since I'm watching Prodigy this week...

I liked this episode, too. I with they'd had this episode, or one like it, earlier in the season--in place of the Jonas we got in the first three episodes or so. *g*

I feel pretty much as you do about Jonas. I don't know why I liked this episode so much, but I quite enjoyed angsty Jonas. It's funny, but I liked Jonas best when he was with Daniel in Meridian (that kind of mentor/student thing) and also in Fallen/Homecoming.

Anyway, I don't remember enough of the details of Prophecy to comment too much, but it was my favorite Jonas episode. I'm a sucker for the sick and angsty boys. hehe

P.S. I feel bad for you watching Prodigy. *g* I don't know why, but I really disliked Hailey, and that episode was just such BS. *g* I could say more, but I'm not sure if you're completely spoiled for it or not. *g*

There were some cute Jack and Teal'c moments, but not enough to make up for the suckage that was Hailey, IMHO. (And I will *not* think of her as a "young Sam." No. Just...no. Sam was never like that! *g*)

I think I'm just going to keep busy while the Hailey parts air and wait for the good stuff at the end LOL

It's just not fair. Jonas finally gets an episode to shine as his own character and it's right before the finale. I know sometimes it takes a while for a character to click, but man. The others clicked right away in S1.

I'm glad Daniel came back. I love the classic team. But it still makes me sad.

I know. When I first started watching the show, I was determined not to be a Jonas hater. *g* I always hate it when people dislike a character just because he or she wasn't on the show from the beginning. I'd seen a couple of random season 6 episodes out of context before I'd seen much of the show and I didn't love him, but I liked him well enough. I thought he was cute. I didn't know anything about the controversy behind the scenes--about why MS left or anything like that.

Then I watched the series in order and...LOL I did end up disliking Jonas for a while. It had nothing to do with Meridian, but his whole arc in Redemption and the episode that came after that with the flood on the ship... The way that whole thing was set up just reeked of, "Jonas is good. Jonas is great. You *will* like him! He's better. He's best."

That was a big turn-off for me. I ended up not watching all of season 6 (kind of like you *g*), not because of Jonas, but I just got bored with it. I didn't even watch The Changeling even though I'd heard that was a good episode. I did go back and watch those episodes later because it was important to me to see every episode, plus my family wasn't inclined to skip any when we all watched it together.

When I'd seen the whole season, I felt more neutral about Jonas. I didn't hate him and I actually did end up feeling sort of sorry for the character, because they set him up all wrong. I've said it before, but I think his introduction to the show was possibly the worst introduction of a new character on any show that I've ever seen. *g*

Then, as you said, they kept slotting him into Daniel's role over and over and/or just...I don't know. He was so smart he memorized everything it took Daniel years and years to study? *g* The whole thing was just a little much and they rarely gave him anything interesting to do.

It's funny, but I actually also really liked him in that episode before Abyss. I think it's Frozen. A lot of people seemed to see him taking on Daniel's role there, and I think he did...sort of, but it was Daniel's role on the team. He didn't come off like a Daniel clone to me there. He handled it all differently than Daniel would have, and I liked his gentle and uncertain demeanor and the way he seemed to feel out of place there and also out of place and out of step with the team. I wish Jonas had been introduced more like that.

I also liked Jonas in the episode with Egeria (SP?) when he fell into the vat of symbiotes and was calling for Teal'c. For some reason I loved that scene and it's my favorite Jonas scene ever. *g*

I know. I'm weird. hehe

Nonono! Prodigy is awesome! You must watch and enjoy! Jack and Teal'c especially (*hugs them gleefully*), and Sam's background... As for Hailey, well, I think she's supposed to be annoying. I don't think Sam was like that when she was younger, exactly, but I think she does recognise some of Hailey's drive and ambition. And Hailey has some moments later in the ep where I quite liked her - but of course that's only my opinion.

But the bits with Jack and Teal'c and the scientists... Worth any amount of annoying minor characters. *points at icon* Best bit.

[identity profile] moonshayde.livejournal.com 2007-03-26 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I think Hailey was supposed to be annoying too. But there is annoying and ANNOYING. She was annoying in Proving Ground but I was okay with that. She was so annoying in Prodigy that I stopped watching. Of course, I was a newbie and a different kind of fan back then.

But everyone tells me the Teal'c and Jack stuff is gold. And it's the last episode I have left to watch, aside from the S10 ones that haven't aired on SciFi yet so...

The Jack and Teal'c stuff is so adorable. Also some cute Jack and Sam stuff. Some of my favourite lines are from that episode... and, darn it, I can't quote them at you until you watch it! *g*
