Fic: By Her Judgment

This fic was written for the Sam Carter Ficathon at [livejournal.com profile] samcarterfic to promote GEN Samfic. Because there is never enough gen fic out there. While the following fic is Sam-centric, it is very much a classic team fic. It was fun to try to put a unique twist on an old type of storyline. I'm glad that I participated.

Title: By Her Judgment
Author: Moonshayde
Rating/Warning: PG-13/minor language, violence
Spoilers: Non-specific spoilers up to and including Season 5
Recipient: [livejournal.com profile] kellifer_fic
Request details: Who wants: "Sam being protective of the boys,
something unusual being used as a weapon and SG-1 dealing with an
offworld matriarchal society."
And doesn't want: "Pregnancy or marriage or gender bending."

Summary: After encountering a matriarchal society, Sam takes command of SG-1 to ensure friendly negotiations. However, Sam's skills as a soldier, a scientist, and a friend are pushed to their limits when SG-1 falls victim to the society's biases and instability.

Disclaimer: On-site.

Ooo...this sounds good. I will have to keep this in mind for when I come home from work tonight. (I'm about to leave in 15 minutes.)

It's not perfect, but I'm proud of it. If you read, I hope you enjoy!

I really liked your fic. It was one of the ones that stood out in the crowd when I was ingesting as much ficathon fic as I could the other night.

I loved how you could just feel Sam's irritation with Jack and Daniel. The team characterizations were great, and it was nice to see Sam put in a position of leadership with Jack still around.

Nice work!

Thanks! Characterization is super important to me so I'm glad it worked. Thanks for reading :)

Wow, that was a great read. I kept the file up the whole day, coming back when I had a few minutes here and there. I just finished. I just love long, teamy goodness fics.

I loved your Sam. So sure of herself, yet not so sure too. I loved the plot. We don't get enough matriarchal societies on SG-1. I don't blame her for getting annoyed with the boys. They can be quite annoying at times.

They can get annoying, but we love them anyway, don't we? ;)

Thanks for reading. I'm glad that you enjoyed it. It was fun to write!

I wasn't able to read this all at once, but now that I've finished (and actually, even before I finished it) I can say I absolutely loved it.

Excellent telling of a well-planned story. Everyone seemed very much in character, but I was getting an earlier-than-season-5 vibe from Daniel and to a lesser extent Jack and Sam.

Yeah, since we didn't have many team adventures in season 5, I had to take a few liberties there. I don't usually like to do that, but it wouldn't fit the story otherwise. So I injected the more jaded bits where I could. Heh.

Thanks though. I'm glad that you've enjoyed it :)

Wow. Oh wow, this was tight. Every plot point, from the boys being juvenile about waiting for their dinner and eating too much to Anu sincerely entreating Sam to not make the same mistakes she did... it all worked from character motivation, for the plot in the moment and for the larger arc.

This was just very well crafted. I really enjoyed, too, seeing Sam take the responsibility so seriously, especially since there were some wierd scenes in later seasons with her command decisions being mistakes and getting no acknowledgement. So I'm adoring that this, as an early command, was so complex and emotionally loaded and filled with affection. Yay early team, yay! And I know I gave the 'no reccing' caveat for the links I was given, but I will rec this, LOUDLY at some point in the future. Thank you so much for pointing me here.

Thank you muchly. I am proud of this fic. I'm always trying to perfect technique. Sometimes I succeed but other times I fail. But I am proud of this fic and mostly happy with the way it came out. And it gave me a chance to write Sam :)

Thanks again for giving it a try.
