The Guide to Me
Every so often I post a basic breakdown of me. I swear
surreallis was in my brain because she just did one herself.
Our interests and tastes are always changing, and friends grow close or grow apart. So, this is more detailed information about who I am and what to expect on my journal. You can use it as a guide for friending and defriending if you'd like.
Writing
First and foremost, I babble about writing. It sneaks into most posts even when I try to hold it back. I'm trying to save that more for my writing journal, but who am I kidding? I'm always going to talk writing whether it's fanfic or profic or critique on the writing of a TV show. I love writing. So if you love to talk about the writing process, you've come to the right place. This is until you get sick of my inability to shut up over it ;)
SG-1
This has been my main fandom since 2003. The mythology and the human aspect drew me to the show. While I don't talk as much about this show currently, I still love it and it will always be one of the shows to stay with me.
Technically, I don't have any pairings for this show. While I started out being predominately a Daniel fan with much team love for the rest alongside him, I've grown to being a team fan who loves all the characters fairly equally. They are like ice cream flavors. One day I might really want some Sam but the next I need Jack. Daniel's a staple I can always come back to. And who doesn't love Teal'c? When I am feeling daring, I even have some Cam, Vala, Landry, and Jonas on the side. There is no question that Hammond and Janet will always be there ;)
I'm really not interested in shipper or slasher wars and I feel that everyone should be respected in fandom. I'm gen for the show, something I am very proud of, though I will write just about anything in fandom. I'm like that. So don't be surprised if I say I'm not fond of a pairing and then I turn around and write them. That's just how I am.
That being said, I do have some preferences when it comes to ship. I really enjoy Jack/Sara when done tastefully. The same goes for Sam/Daniel or Daniel/Sha're. I enjoy Daniel/Janet and Sam/Teal'c. I used to be a big fan of Jack/Daniel as well, but I got a little disillusioned by badfic. I still say everyone has a right to their pairing.
SG-1 is the fandom where I have the most sensitivities. I get defensive for just about every character/actor if I feel like "bashing" has gone too far. For me, there is a difference between a strong opinion and someone just being a jerk. My flist includes SG-1 fans of all kinds, so I expect people to act fairly on my LJ. Please check your fandom baggage at the door.
Superman-verse
I've been a Superman fan since I was a toddler. It's one of my first memories. I loved the movies. I watched one of the various cartoons. While I didn't watch LnC or The Animated Series when it aired, I finally broke down and started watching Smallville during its first season. My stubbornness over "No Lex in Smallville!!" was quickly replaced by much love for the entire premise. I've stuck through Smallville through the good and bad, feeling the show works best when it sticks to focusing on Clark and Lex.
I do ship on this show. Clark/Lois is probably one of the few OTPs I have. However, I think I define OTP differently than most people. I'm fine with Clark and Lois having other romances as long as it comes back to them in the end. And it will. It's Superman after all. His one true love will always be Lois. But for Smallville, I am perfectly fine with them just hinting at Clois and building their friendship. The actual relationship will happen much later.
As for other ships? Jimmy/Kara makes me smile. So does Chloe/Jimmy. Clark/Lana is canon, but I hate how it's been dragged out. I am enjoying it unravel this season and back when it was just a crush. I liked the hints of Lex/Lana before S6. And I used to like Chloe/Clark before they settled into a comfortable friendship.
I do not support the Chlois Theory at all.
I'm really enjoying LnC. I devoured most of the series in less than 2 months! It gives me the warm fuzzies. I am stalling finishing the series because I won't have anymore left. Where are all the LnC fans? The cartoon is also fantastic. The movies will always always be with me, and Christopher Reeve will always be Superman to me. I just can't help being a Superman fan!
Supernatural
This is my new shiny. I've been watching it on and off (mainly through DVDs) since last winter.
Having been a huge fan of X-Files and the paranormal in general, it's no surprise I fell into this show. I resisted it for a very long time, as I tend to do, and finally caved after catching the last 20 minutes of In My Time of Dying.
I'm a Dean girl. Dean is my favorite. It could be because I think JA has gorgeous eyes. It may be because deep down I kinda like the bad boy. It could be because JA played on SV. But I think it's mostly because as an overprotective older sibling, I understand a lot of his motivations. I'm a lot like Dean, aside from all teh stupid.
However, when I say I'm a Dean girl that does not mean I want the show to be ALL ABOUT DEAN. I love Sam, too. I'm happiest when both Sam and Dean have vital roles. I also feel that while the show is about both boys, it's more about Sam than Dean. At least it was in the beginning. That is mainly because Sam is so deeply tied to the core mythology of the show.
It's fair to say that I love both Winchesters, but I sway toward Dean a little more. I would prefer to read fic about him and I love heroic!Sam and whumped!Dean. But at the end of the day, the show would be nothing without the two of them. You'll find me defending both of them.
I fangirl Jared and Jensen.
I also like John and I liked him flawed. I have much Bobby love. And Ellen. I don't hate Jo. I like Ruby, but I'm mildly annoyed with Bela.
I don't ship on this show at all. None. The only ship I liked was John/Mary and maybe Sam/Jess in principle.
I do believe that this show is going to be one that is going to consume me more and more as time goes on. It'll go down as one of my fave shows. Christian mythology! Demons! Monsters! Pretty boys! What's not to love?
The X-Files
One of my fave shows ever. Aliens and paranormal. And FBI! Woohoo! I don't talk about it nearly as much as I should, but it still remains one of my fave shows. I miss it like crazy. That is one of the reasons why
stargazercmc and I created
trustno1_redux. We wanted a happy little place to discuss the show without the wank.
I never was involved in the fandom for this show. I also openly admit I was a bit of a stubborn witch when it originally aired. I got so mad that DD left at the end that I stopped watching. I can't wait to go back and revisit that last season to see if my opinions may have changed.
I shipped Mulder/Scully on this show. I wasn't adverse to either one of them having a relationship, but in the end I wanted them together. And when I say in the end, I meant very last episode. I was afraid if they put them together prior to the end, their characters would get weird.
Yeah.
I also liked Doggett. I wanted to hate him, but I couldn't. Reyes never grew on me. Maybe when I watch again, I'll like her more. I'm still ticked off about the Lone Gunmen.
Despite it all, I still ship Mulder/Scully. I especially adore the early seasons of the show where you just didn't know whether there were aliens or if it was all some mass conspiracy. Those were good times.
Star Wars
I have much love for Star Wars. I grew up on Star Wars and it was my first official fandom, even if it was a fandom of one. (I collected. I went fannish. I wrote fanfic. I did fanart. But I wasn't involved online.) Star Wars completely consumed me and it did for a very long time. I rediscovered it back in 1994, way before anyone really knew prequels would be coming. I read the books and everything. I was big into Star Wars for nearly 10 years. My interest started to wane when my friendship with another big fan started to crumble; Star Wars related material was a little too hurtful to deal with at that time. I've gotten to the point where I am rekindling my love.
I adore the original trilogy. TESB is my all time fave. I like the prequels, but I don't love them. They were sloppy. It's a shame. They could have been great if Lucas had relinquished some control and had a beta on his work.
Luke Skywalker will always be my favorite character. Even if I've come to appreciate Han more and more as I have gotten older, it's all about Luke for me. I was a little disappointed when Lucas announced that the whole story was about Anakin Skywalker, but that is how it goes. I am in love with the parallels between father and son, and how redemption is achieved through the son. The EU seriously screwed it all up, but I refuse to acknowledge that as canon anyway.
I'm a huge fan of Leia, too, and fascinated by Lucas' take the mythical story of twins. I'm a Han/Leia shipper and in the EU I liked Luke/Mara best. I also Mary Sued a woman with Luke in my novels.
Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine are amazingly complex and interesting. Loooove Vader and Palp.
I get a little annoyed when people insinuate that Star Wars is just for kids and adults who enjoy it need to grow up. Maybe it's because I feel like deep down I don't have to grow up. I like the mythical archetypes. I like the story. I like the hope. But that's me.
I hope to start talking more about Star Wars. I may never be as fannish about it as I once was, but there is something about the story that keeps me coming back.
Farscape
Out of all my shows, I think this is the one I am least squeeworthy for. I like the show. I think Ben Browder and Claudia Black are amazing actors. Scorpius is one of the best villains I have seen on TV period. D'Argo is awesome. I'm a fan of the John/Aeryn dynamic.
I think it's because I just don't like the crack episodes. I'm a fan of weird, but this gets a little too weird for me. I find I am drawn into the show when it tackles major storyarcs and angst. It's a beautifully angsty show, like Supernatural. Plus, I'm not very fond of space scifi. I think Firefly and Star Wars are the few exceptions. One of the reasons I have trouble with SGA is because it's too techy/space scifi for me. It's also one of the reasons why I prefer classic SG-1 to the newer stuff, and why I'm not into Star Trek.
Even so, I do like the show and I would love to be able to talk about it more. The three-parter arc involving Kansas and Terra Firma in S4 really allowed me to connect to it in a way I hadn't connected before. The subsequent episodes were also awesome and the culmination towards the series finale has been exciting. This show does amazingly well when it battles these larger political issues and the ramifications of the characters' decisions. And that is why Farscape makes it onto my list. When I rewatch the series, I think I'll like it more. In the meantime, I hope to encounter more and more people so I can discuss.
Other Interests/Shows
I like a lot of other shows, but you don't see me talk about them as much. But I am always there to discuss if prodded.
I'm a huge fan of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. I love Jack Sparrow and I'm seriously into Will/Elizabeth.
I play video games, though not well. My fave games are Eternal Darkness, the Final Fantasy games, and The Legend of Zelda. I adore FFX.
I enjoy the Harry Potter books, but I'm only in book 4. Firefly is an amazing show. I'd like to explore Dr. Who and Torchwood. Someday I'll watch Angel. The History Channel is made of win. Futurama never fails to make me laugh and cry. I'm still making my way through MacGyver. Sanctuary looks very promising and I've watched a few of the webisodes.
Music is a big part of me. I love all kinds of music, minus country and rap. However, there are always exceptions. Big faves of mine are: Enya, Shiny Toy Guns, Boston, Muse, Linkin Park, U2, and Keane to name a few.
I'm trained in anthropology and feminist theory. I love science, history, and literature. I dabble in just about every subject because learning is my life. Like many people, I have a few short stories and poems published, and I'm aiming to be a novelist.
I know there is tons more I could talk about, but we'd be here all day. So that's me!
As I said earlier, you can use this as a guide for friending and defriending. In any event, it's just a nice way to get to know me. I hope this helps the new people on my flist, and maybe even the old :)
