----------------------------

When she finally found him, she saw him teetering between the light and the darkness.

Daniel sat on a cool metal table in one of the supply rooms on the ship. Half in shadow, he remained still, tight-lipped and stiff, as he stared ahead.

Soundlessly, she crossed the floor and hopped onto the metal table next to him. He didn't say a word. He didn't move. He didn't even turn to acknowledge her. He just continued to stare into the dead air, his face as hard as stone.

But there was a flickering in his eyes, the only movement that reassured her that he was real. It was through this nearly imperceptible flash – this small window – that she could see through him, into him.

The war that waged in his eyes wasn't just the accumulation of stress and the terrible choices he had been faced with today. They also held an amalgamation of years of conflict; battles that not only had worn him physically, but also battles that had changed him, shaped him, and threatened to tear apart his soul.

Sam was no stranger to this war. No soldier was.

Quietly, she leaned into him, resting her head on his shoulder, allowing him the solace of silence and the support of her warmth.

It was only then that he bowed his head and let it go.

Nice! I wish there had been more of a sense in the ep itself of Daniel feeling divided or troubled--because it sure seemed like he ought to have felt that way. Hopefully the idea will be followed up, though; there was so much going on in the ep that there wasn't much time for emotional fallout. Not that SG-1 has been doing a great job with the emotional fallout in the past couple of seasons anyway...

But that's why there's fic, I suppose. And this hits just the right tone.

This was a hot button with me in the episode. Though, I do understand they can't cover everything. We'll see.

Thanks :)

I felt like it *should* have been a hot button for me in the ep--or at least should have been something that piqued my interest--but for some reason I was having a hard time caring one way or the other about Daniel. No idea why. *shrugs*

I was rather indifferent to him for most of the episode--actually the parts he was in--and loving Vala and Sam so much that I didn't even miss his absence. (WHich makes me sad.)

But this just caused me to flip. Maybe because I am just trying desperately to still care and hold onto the character that brought me to the show.

Eeee, Sam and Vala!!! Weren't they both just fantastic? I'm trying to decide if it's just my bias towards both characters right now, or AT and CB's acting, or if--hope against hope--TPTB might finally be giving us good women. Definite highlights, both of them!

And it does make me sad that I'm not very enthusiastic about Daniel these days because I have always loved him so much. But right now I'm loving everyone else so much that I'm not feeling as disappointed in Daniel as I might otherwise be. We'll see how the season plays out.
